Programmers for E-150s?

Hey guys are there any hand held tuners for 99-03 E-150 vans with 5.4L motors? I have a conversion van with the 5.4 and I'm looking for better towing performance and gas mileage. Any help would be great.

Thanks
Rich

I suggest you go with the Troyer custom tuned X-Cal2.

Marc, I know he can probably tune 1. I was seeing if there are any others out there.

Hi Rich,

Well, there are probably a few units that can load a tune into your vehicle, but most people are concerned about getting the best possible tuning - and we know the E-series pretty well.

Their characteristics are that they do not breathe well at all - power production is pretty much over by the mid-4000 rpm range due to their very restrictive air intake tracts but also the exhaust setup, they really don't breathe well due to the van packaging.

That being said, we do pick up nice gains on those 5.4 vans from our tuning, what really matters the most is increasing the part-throttle torque - that is key to day in and day out driveability as well as better fuel mileage, and that is generally where we see the most improvement on that platform (vans) just due to their nature/configuration.

Though we also carry other off the shelf types of tuners, I don't recommend going that route in those vans, as so many of them have limitations in the tuning that cannot be addressed other than by in-depth custom tuning.

Perhaps the most "visible" and outspoken member here owning that type of vehicle is Phil Kanarkowski (hope i spelled that right), his screen name is "openclasspro" - (there is also a number after that part of his screen name here, but I can't remember off the top of my head) - he brought his van in for a dyno day here as well.

I hope that brief info helps, & best of luck whatever you decide!
