Edge Evo level 2 problem

When I program my truck to level 2, I get some engine knock when the truck is under a strain such as going up an incline. When I return it to stock, the engine knock goes away. Anyone else have this problem?

Nope. The only time I had a knock was on level 3 with some Exxon 93. Went back to Shell, no knock.

I do have a new problem though. I returned to stock for a week or so, took truck in for service. Oil change, rotation and state emissions inspection. When I got home and tried to go back to a custom level 3, I got the message that my unit did not support my current calibration. Now what did they do to my computer? I will have to upgrade my Edge, just have not had time to mess with it.

The dealer may have updated your stock calibration. Hopefully EDGE can help when you get time.

I get just a minor knock at part throttle on some days. It does the same thing on my 05 worktruck with a stock 5.4. It's minor so I haven't worried about it much. May just be the fuel I use sometimes.

You are suppose to be able to run 87 octane with level 2. That's what I am running.

I got that error once or twice before. I just unplugged the EVO and plugged it back in and it didn't have any problems after that. I can't remember if I unlplugged it and plugged it back in while the key was turned to on or not.

OK, I will go give that a try. Thanks.

Ok. I unplugged it and followed their steps for plugging back up, works fine now. And the calibration was different from the original. FX4_Guy, Thanks for the advice.

Joe,

Based on my experience, this is almost definitely a fuel quality problem. The quality of fuel in my area is terrible, and I'd been experiencing a moderate level of engine pinging when under load (e.g., accelerating or going up a hill) for the last several months. I'd even asked the dealer to check it out with no results.

I tried every brand of fuel in my area within a reasonable driving distance, but none of them made any difference. However, one day I happened to be next to a Shell station when my low fuel light came on, so I put ~5 gallons in the tank. Within 15 miles, 70% of the engine pinging was gone. 400 miles later (and nothing but Shell gas), the engine pinging is almost completely eliminated.

The only problem now is I have to drive 10 miles just to get decent fuel for my truck, and Shell gas costs ~$0.20/gallon more here :o ....but it's worth it!

BTW, I'm not saying you need to use Shell gas--I'm just saying this is what worked for me. You should try different brands in your area to see what works best for you.

Good luck!

As mentioned earlier, I have had better mileage out of Shell and Conoco.

I went to Valero (for the first time) the other day and my truck pings like a S.O.B. I usually put in Shell or Murphy (Walmart) gas and have never pinged. The brand of gas and quality of gas does play a major roll.

I guess I am lucky. I have at least 20 gas stations within a 5 miles radius of my house...

From my experience Shell has had the best gas and in my area the cheapest gas. However, I've never had knocking from Valero either which is where i normally go. I think it mostly depends on your area than the actual brand of gas you get. Also remember that gas goes bad so that could be a factor if the gas station has old gas.

Did you change the timing when you programmed level 2? Level 2 says to use at least 89 octane. You should only use 87 if you adjust the timing.
