Where did you read that? Lvl 2 can be used with 87 all day long. LVL 2 is a towing tune and I have only had slight pinging with certain fuel. The only time you need to adjust timing is if you go over 87. At that, you don't need to adjust it. Level 3 requires 91 and then you can bump your timing up. If you run 89 you can also bump your timing. There is no timing change for 87. I tow frequently with mine on LVL 2 and reg 87 gas and have no problems. You can however run 91 on LVL 1,2,or 3. You can adjust the timimg if you wish but it is not necessary.

Actually, Joe is correct. The level 2 program should run just fine on 87 octane. Here's the quote from the Edge manual:

This setting not only provides improved transmission shifting, but will also modify the ignition timing and fuel injection strategies to improve the performance of your vehicle. This level is designed to run with 87 octane fuel, although you may realize additional benefits by running 89 octane (or better) fuel. You should see an improvement in fuel economy as well as added horsepower and torque. When towing a heavy load such as a boat or camper, we recommend you using this setting.
EDIT: I missed the4by4freek's post above. He's already answered the question.

When I had installed level 2 on my truck it stated on the programmer to run 89 octane. From that I assume (yes, I know what assuming does) that it is at that time programmed to run on 89 unless you adjust the timing to run 87.

You aren't able to set the octane you wish to use. The only thing you can change is the timing. If you go into timing setting or VCT it will tell you what it's set at.

Actually, the early versions didn't have a timing adjust....they had an octane setting. I believe that Edge did the correct thing by changing it to a timing setting since the timing adjustment depends on more than just the fuel octane (elevation for example). I think that they have not updated the user manual yet either? Anyway, just a useless FYI.

Also, isn't VCT for Variable Cam Timing, which is different from ignition timing? I have never set that as a parameter to view, I'll need to try it just to see what is displayed?

I would just like to address the pinging noise:

1. Good data on the gas idea; Ford recommends BP (Amoco Fuels) but I'm not sure if that's just a gimmick or what. I've always used Amoco Ultimate (93 octane) in mine (I guess for no other good reason than that commercial I used to see about it being clear gas and I figured that alone is better on the system from tank to combustion) but I'm definately going to give Shell a shot.

2. While I was on leave in Michigan last month I stoped by the dealership for what I'm guessing is up the same alley as the knock you guys are talking about, the guy at the service desk imediately said something about replacing a Cam Phaser (like he'd dealt with this before) but since he said he would need to keep the truck for a couple of days (which at that time would've exceeded my vacation) I waited until I got back here in NC and took it to the dealership. The jack-*sses here ran the diagnostic and said there were no problems (I guess good old fashioned "listening to the engine" deosn't apply around here anymore. Anyway, I'm gonna wait till I get back to the Motor City next month and take up that offer for the Cam Phaser replacement (Whatever the h*ll that is).

note: Mine ticks during idle, like a plunging/tick sound.

I had the same problem with mine. I have been running on level 2 for about 10 months now and about a month ago, my engine started pinging under heavy acceleration, so I started using 89 octane and problem was solved. I can't explain this because it was fine with 87 to start with and then decided that it needed 89. Hope it doesn't get too greedy!!!!!!!!!!
