Superchips 1715 Questions

I have an opportunity to get a Superchips 1715 tuner for my truck. I have a 2000 F150 4x4, my mods are true dual exhaust (with glasspacks) and a Mac cold air intake. The tuner will only run me $200, which seems like a good deal.

I've heard some mixed opinions on this tuner, and wanted to see if you guys thought for the price it would give me some results. I would get a Troyer tuned model, but don't have the money right now. Does this seem worth it for me to make the buy? I figure I could always sell it after I get the money for a better model...

I went with a 1714 when I first bought the truck. Its a great tuner to start with so you can add a intake and exhaust and feel the gains. I just ordered a XCAL2 and when I get it I'll probably sell the 1714 for around 200. Its been a good tuner for me.

I bought the 1714 for my 2004 F150 and would highly recommend NOT getting the 1715. My understanding is that it's basically the same as 1714, but the 1715 is for the '05's. The 1714 was a disappointment from the day I opened it. The results were minimal at best. I left it on my truck for 2 years and was never really happy with it. The shifting still sucked. The so called performance tune was pathetic, as were the other tunes. If you want or need it to correct for a gear swap or tire size changes then it's probably OK. If you're getting it expecting it to make your truck better to drive, no way. After a LONG time debating on whether or not to get the EDGE Evolution, I finally bit the bullet and ordered one a few weeks ago. I love the EDGE. My truck doesn't shift every time I hit the slightest grade on the highway anymore. When I press the gas pedal, the truck actually accelerates right away. I cant say enough about how impressed I am w/ this tuner. I dont have any first hand experience w/ the XCAL 2, but I'm sure it's at least as good as the EDGE, if not better. I only remember ever reading 1 person that wasn't pleased w/ the XCAL 2 w/ the troyer tunes. Synopsis: Save your money and buy a good tuner the first time. Otherwise you'll waste time trying to find a sucker to buy your 1715. There's probably a reason the guy is trying to sell it for only $200. I'd let my 1714 go for that in a heartbeat.

I on the other hand would have to disagree... I had the 1715 on my 2000 Lariat (5.4) for over a year and was extremely happy with it. I could feel a huge improvment in performance gains.... I bought mine for $400 and to me it was well worth it.....The only reason I don't have mine anymore is because, I bought a Lightning.. I sold it off to a buddy and used that money to buy Excal2 for the Lightning... You really shouldn't have a problem getting rid of it if you dont like it. I personally think $200 will give the performance gain you might be looking for..

So all in all is the $200 worth it? I would use the tuner on the 87 octane mode the majority of the time, and also to adjust tire size, as I am soon getting a new set of 33s. I have seen these tuners NOT VIN LOCKED on E-bay for $250-$300. What kind of gains are seen, even if minimal?

And to GB150, the 1715 is for the 97-03 model years, not the 05.

To get anything out of a 1715 you have to run premium gas. I had the 1715 for 3 years and just ordered an XCAL2 which is due to be delivered Wednesday. The 87 tune does nothing except mess with the transmission. The premium tow is where I kept it and it worked fine but I have heard that the XCAL2 is far and away a better tune for my 6000lb F250 sporting the real powerful 5.4L engine. I can tell you without my tune in my F250, its like driving a tractor with a sledge dragged behind it.

The “group buy” for the XCal2 with custom tunes is still on until Friday. IMO it’s the way to go & the price is right

Be very leery of buying a tuner off eBay …. Use the search button here and find out what has happen to some people here that got there’s off eBay. Plus you don’t get a warranty when you buy the chips off eBay.

If I had the bucks right now myself, I would be getting in on the group buy

How much cheaper is this group buy? I would get the $379 package, seeing that the 1715 doesn't seem like it would benefit me, especially running only 87 octane...anyone else feel this way?

The 1715 on 87 is still worlds better than stock. I am running that right now.

Norm, how much better is it running? What kinds of gains?

As for my other question, how much does the Troyer Group Buy save me?

I'm also trying to buy some new wheels and tires right now, so this isn't a good time for the group buy. I'm pretty new, but it sounds like this has come before? Anyone take a stab at when the next one will be around. Are they anually? It would help so I could be ready to make the purchase...
