Help With Datalogging
Help With Datalogging
Help.....anyone.
I have a 2000 Expedition XLT with the 5.4. I have a 5 program tune from Mike. I would like to Dyno the Expo but I cannot find a dyno to put it on. I spoke with TP and they said they could not because I cannot put the Expedition into 2WD. Therefore, I am having to do the datalogging on the road. To save a trip to southern Virginia, I would like to do the data logging myself. I plan on getting the Autotap from Mike to do all the datalogging except the A/F ratios. Here is my dilemma - I cannot afford to buy the Innovate Motorsport LM-1 w/ RPM converter to do a complete datalog. I saw the Zeitronix Zt-2 and would like to know if this would work (it is nearly half the cost of the LM-1). I sent an email to Zeitronix and here was their reply:
"the Zt-2 logs the RPM along with AFR and other engine parameters right out of the box. No additional RPM converters required.
The Zt-2 is equipped with the RPM signal conditioning circuit and can read
the RPM signal form several sources:
1 The Tach signal
2 ECU igniter transistor drive
3 Primary side of the ignition coil"
My question is how do I get the tach signal to the Zt-2. Where is the tach signal, where is the primary side of the ignition coil etc.....
Any and all help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Jeff

Do these guys have a tech support hotline, or a forum? I'd ask them to supply that info for a modular Ford motor.
Innovate does for the LM-1. I use an inductive clamp for my LM-1 & bypass all that BS.
You could, I suppose, tap into any COP primary wire directly ...

Hi.
As I said, I use the inductive clamp that plugs into the LMA-2 RPM converter, which of course then plugs into the LM-1.
( More recently, I'm doing this using an Xcal2 and it's analog input capablity, interfaced with just the LM-1 analog Lambda output - no LMA2 or clamp - the X2 supplies the rpm data ).
You stated your unit had a direct RPM signal input - why I mentioned their tech support was to ensure you could use the raw signal from a COP primary connection directly, or whether some sort of attenuation/conditioning was required. They should be able, and are in the best position, to help you with product-specific tech details such as these.
Cheers

Thanks again
I have not purchased the unit yet, I am evaluating the unit to see if it would meet my needs. That's why I have asked the questions. I am leaning towards the LM-1 but saw this unit for a cheaper price.
Where does the inductive clamp attach to? I have no idea with the COP. If there were plug wires, I would know.
I do appreciate the help - Thanks.

Jeff,
I am in the exact same situation you are in. I would love to get it dyno'd and dialed in by TP. It has been suggested that you can pull the fuse that controls the 4wd system. Any thoughts on this? Seem like it should work but haven't played with it yet. If anyone has tried this and had been in a situation were the 4wd would have kicked in... such as snow, ice.... let me know!!!

It looks like I am going to be in the same boat with my 01 Expedition 4X4. Any suggestions from Mike at Troyer?

In speaking with Anita, she said I could bring the truck to them and they could road Dyno the Expo, and that would be fine, but I have to take a day off work and travel to southwestern Virginia (3.5 hour beautifiul drive) - and as you all know the expo get only around 14 mpg.
So, I thought I could just do it myself. besides, I could use the Autotap on my other vehicles to help diagnose problems with them.
I don't know about pulling the 4WD fuse - ANYONE?
Thanks for the help and support.

ps....Great looking truck Melman

Here's a thread that may help -see Mike's reply (post #10).

w.r.t the 4wd - what about dropping the front axles/driveshaft. or would that cause the system to think it's faulted? Dunno on that one.
I like Onelowf's dragstrip idea
. Apparently, a 2nd gear load datalogging run in my current truck with Mike's tuning installed works out to appprox 105 mph @ redline, so doing this on a public sideroad should be real interesting
Perhaps you should consider taking that scenic little trip...
Good luck

Hi & thanks!
Wow... that's one of the very few times anyone actually liked what I posted - usually they just get all pissy & such
. Actually, I suck at searching - JP is the true master
Let us know how it all works out.
Cheers & have fun!
(Long Island Ice tea nite - waiting for good 'ol Ernesto to show up ...)

Yesterday I ordered the Xcal - 2 to replace my 5 program superchip and the Innovate motorsport Lm-1. I like the idea of being able to receive program updates through email and data log with the same unit.
Looking forward to receiving my new programs.
Thanks for all the help
Jeff
p.s. - Ernesto has arrived!!!!!!

Thanks for the compliment jjszabo. Adam's polishes works wonders. I think I may give Troyer a call the first of next week and see if they can work me in for a road datalogging. I would feel a lot better if I knew it was done right and nobody would do it better than the one's who wrote the program/tune.
I guess I need to take the time to modify my signature to show all the new goodies I added today (including the XCal2 tune). SWEET!!

Good thread.
For those who have AWD systems, meaning not just the "simple" 4x4 setup in the F-150 but an AWD system that cannot be disabled, yes, you can certainly come here and we can do mobile datalogging to get the info we need - that can certainly be done. When we do that, we use the LM-1 ourselves to get the A/F data, just FYI. As long as the sensor is in good shape and you do a calibration before each use, the LM-1 is plenty accurate, as it actually reads in Lambda and shows you that readout - as well as doing a conversion to an AFR number.
In fact, I think it was "melman" I spoke to today about this, and is coming here Monday the 18th for us to do this for his vehicle.
For Jeff - I'm glad you were able to get this worked out, and with your new setup you will be able to datalog everything any time & place you like - that's excellent freedom to have!
