Flex fuel vehichles have a 3 lead sensor in the fuel line between the tank and the motor.
This sensor measures the dielectric property of the fuel in any mix between all gas and alcohol.
This sensor inputs it's signal to the PCM that has programing to alter the ignition tables, richen up the fuel ratio into the 9 to1 range or some where in between accorrdingly, and usually has fuel injectors with a larger flow rate than a strait gas engine.
