Why do I never listen to Mike ??
Why do I never listen to Mike ??
Well he got the best of me "AGAIN" !!
Mike and I have had some pretty heated discussions over the past 6 or 7 years pertaining to the F-150's, and many other vehicles. I use the word heated because I am not one who agrees with someone no matter who they are or what they know without proof. ( are you laughing yet Wizard Man ?)
I have been playing with my present F-150 (2004 4x4 Supercrew) by changing the suspension around by lifting it, lowering it, changing tire and rim size, and just about everything else you can do to make it different than most you see out there. I really liked the look when I had the 295's Nittos on it with the 2" Autospring leveling kit, but Mike kept telling me that I was killing my mileage and handling by having it in that configuration.
After 30,000 miles in that configuration, one hell of a lot of those miles on the road between my Shop and Mikes, I broke down and went the other way with it.
Removed the Autosprings and Nittos, added a 2" drop in the front, and a 5 inch in the rear, and went back to a 285 tire which really fills the wheelwells now that it is in its new stance.
I loaded it with about 800 pounds of "Beach Rations", my wife, 2 daughters, and my father and took off for Cape Hatteras N.C, last Friday morning.
This was the first major road trip since chaning it around as Mike "suggested" that I do, and I figure I was somewhere around 7500-7600 pounds with it loaded.
First stop on the trip was to Mikes Shop to say hello and to let him see it since lowering it. The first thing Mike asked after saying hello to me and my family was " how did it do on gas on the 350 mile trip down?"
Well, here is where he got me again....I averaged 19.59 mpg running 80 mph for the 350 mile trip...I picked up 2 miles per gallon....
I guess he was right again because he kept telling me that the wind and tire drag was killing my mileage... guess I should have listened to him sooner :o
I parked next to his ( Anita's) shop truck which is a 2004 4x4 Supercrew and was really surprised as to how much lower my truck really is now compared to theirs which is stock height...Too bad theirs has a Roush on it because if looks were horsepower, mine sure looks quicker.

I had to bust a gut laughing at this thread - it was nice getting a chance to meet Marc's Dad and the rest of his family, which we had not had a chance to do before, despite how much time Marc has spent with us, as they all live up in Ohio, where his home is (of course.)
His truck looked SOooo much better - now it has a great stance, and the fuel mileage it is getting on our tuning and his lowering job is nothing short of amazing - he picked up 2+ mpg with our tuning, and then another solid 2 mpg by getting it down out of the wind (we both have 4x4 2004 trucks). When he pulled his truck up along side of Anita's truck (which is our 2004 workhorse with the Roush blower at stock ride height), ours looked like it was a mile high.
Given the great mpg we're getting considering with our truck, it would be very nice to get another 2 mpg by dropping it - which we'll get around to as soon as we get time from working on all the other vehicles coming in & out of here!
Marc has a great sense of humor, he actually has always been very cooperative - though it was nice to see his truck lowered a bit, and track the mpg results as well, just for the data. It's a nicely configured truck that runs extremely well for it's limited performance mods (it's been tuned to the nth degree, 3.25" AF1, Lightning-style Magnaflow & our E-fans, if memory serves).
Thanks for dropping by on your way on vacation Marc - it was great seeing the whole family, & thanks for posting your mpg results!

Marc, can you tell me what you used to lower your 4x4? I am looking to lower mine. I am a complete noob when it comes to suspension, so I dont know anything I need. But I think I would like to lower it like 2/4 or something. I have a 2001.
Oh, congrats on the new config.

In the rear I removed the 2" blocks, installed an additonal 2" drop shackle, and since the rear was still an inch higher than the front, I removed the springs and had them de-arched the 1" I needed to make the stance level.
I also maintained the stock shocks in the rear. They have plenty of travel in them ....I did have to cut the end links on the Hellwig sway bar that I had previously installed to adjust it properly, but thas was not an issue.
The ride and handling is now unbelieveable, and the gas mileage results speak for themselves..Total cost around $400-$500 dollars if you have mechanical abilities...
Great! Thanks for the info.
Do you know if the blocks are 2" on the 2001 year?
So all I would need for a 2/4 is the DJM 2" lower control arms for the front, and the 2" drop shackles for the back, and remove the block?? Doesn't sound too bad
