Gas milage
Gas milage
Just some FYI. For the longest time I averaged about 10 MPG in the city and 14 MPG on the hiway, till now. I haven't checked my milage for some time. I took the family up to Maine for the 4th of July week-end. Burned up a couple tanks, got 18.5 MPG. That was about a 75% hi-way to 25% back roads driving. I just passed 18k miles on my 04 truck. Not bad at all... See my signature for my rigs specs.

I am quite sure the Retrax has nothing to do with the truck's MPG's. Maybe 1 mile or 2 at the very best... I am "sure" it has to do the the motor getting broken in, which is why I stated the current mileage on the truck... You're a funny dude.............
5.4supcab Lariat
I own a 2005 Supercab Lariat 5.4. I have already put 30,000 miles into it. I have also installed a Hypertech Programmer, A K&N air intake, and a Flowmaster exhaust. After all of these aftermarket products, I still average about 18mpg on the highway. On my message board, it still claims that I average 19.5mpg.

Hi 5.4 Screw,
Thanks for reporting back on your MPG results - our tuning does indeed help the fuel mileage - it's hilarious to see the lengths some will go to in order to claim it was anything other than our tuning that helped, like jward's post claiming the bed cover gave 4.5 mph - that has never happened on one of these trucks, and certainly not on any of the many F-150's we've owned and run covers on.
The reality is, our tuning does deliver solid potential for mpg gains - from there, it's a matter of how the vehicle is operated & maintained, as well as the quality of the fuel used, that determines what the vehicle does in the real world.
I'll give you another example - our 204 F-150 - back when it had our Stage 2 kit on it (before the blower) and a set of headers, it would consistently deliver upwards of 23 mpg cruising at 65 mph on basically flat terrain with the cruise control on and using the A/C - admittedly an ideal scenario aside from running the A/C, but it give you some idea of what is possible in a 6200 lb 4x4 SuperCrew Lariat that had NO tonneau cover at all, by the way.
Then we took off the underdrive pulleys, installed the supercharger, and I put on a KILL MODE type of tune that made the blower work all the time, that was designed to not only give max performance, but to also forget about any hopes of getting decent fuel mileage - and the MPG dropped to roughly an around-town & highly (50/50 split) average of about 15 mpg. Now just about 2 weeks ago, I retuned it so that it has equal throttle response on part-throttle, but does not work the blower as hard, and the mpg shot right back up to 19 mpg on the highway cruising at 72-75 mph with the A/C on NOT using the cruise control, and 17+ mpg in a 50/50 mix of around town & highway driving. All without any tonneau cover - pretty darned good for a supercharged 475-500 HP 5.4 3V SuperCrew 4x4 Lariat weighing 6200 lb.
But then, this is what we do - test for all kinds of different types of scenarios to see what does what. So we use the parts that work best, use the best fuels, and run thru all kinds of scenarios. And for those who don't mind doing a little digging to find unbiased posts, they can find hundreds of posts here with clearly documented fuel mileage gains from our tuning.
Now in 5.4 Screw's case, his MPG is the sum total of his complete configuration - and has told us that he is clearly getting significantly better mpg now with the mods he has, which is a wonderful result - congratulations!
Now in terms of how many miles it takes to get peak power (and the best mpg) from these trucks, that happens very quickly, within about 4K-5K miles or so. Generally, by the time you have changed your oil twice, you are easily at the point of getting best power & mileage from the truck from the standpoint of the engine giving it's best for it's state of modification (or lack thereof) - it doesn't take any 30K miles - heck, at 30K miles you've usually lost 1 mpg or so due to spark plug & O2 sensor deterioration - just FYI.
Anyway, thanks to 5.4 SCREW's post reporting his mpg, we're happy that his combination is working well for him!

????? 23 MPG. Did you have it tuned to stay open loop all of the time ? I assume no lift and stock tires. Still, 23 MPG ??? Come on now.

I can vouch for that mileage...Been around that vehicle since it was new. I am just waiting for the right time when Mikes not looking and then I am going to "BORROW" the Supercharger off of it.
With my Troyer tuning, my in town MPG went up a solid 3/4 MPG. That is constantly hard driving and almost 0 O/D on!
Highway wise, with O/D obviously, I was at a solid 17.5 to 18 @ 85 to 90 MPH. This was with A/C on. Granted, my little V8 probably has to work harder than a 5.4, but I am definately happy with my MPG gains!

Why o why has mine dipped then? 05 KR 4x4 I run either 87 perform or 93 perform and mpg is still at 14.4mpg and I do not run WOT. Straight terrain at 70-75. I envy all of you since I drive 140m ea work day.

I don't know how Troyer got 23mpg out of that truck, but he needs to sell the secret to Ford!
