Happiness += (LongPhoneCallWithMike + PedalToDaMetal)

My feelings about my truck received a big 'ol boost this afternoon. I had missed a call from the 504 area code and called it after I departed a rather lengthy meeting. The folks on the remote end were Troyer Performance.

I was passed on to Mike. This was my first time speaking to him and listening to him. As stated many time, Mike is vastly knowledgable about Ford stuff.

I found that the quick little pinging I have experienced since receiving my XCal2 is likely the result of an optimum tune. I was thinking any pinging was not good. But as Mike covered several areas of tuning strategy (and lots of other stuff) he put me at easy with the quick pinging I had been receiving when accelerating from a stop and even in neutral or park with a quick deflection of the throttle pedal. Such pinging is not the destructive stuff. It is momentary and I am ok with that.

Thank you, Mike, for taking my return call and patiently and methodically putting my concerns at rest.

I put the pedal to the metal and even with the 87 perf tune it accelerated nicely and after the upshift to #2 I was very pleased with the transition and continued acceleration!

Wait, am I misunderstanding something? "pinging" like a marble in a can, like detonation? As far as I know, detontation is always bad. Period. No such thing as "good" detonation (at least not in bikes on the race team I worked on). Or are you refering to something else?

That is good to know, my truck does the same thing but I never got around to calling Mike about it. Instead I just didn't punch it alot, that seems to be the only time it happens. Now that a know its not that big of a issue I wont wory no more thanks rooster2005

I absolutely hate pinging and can not tolerate it at all. I don't know why, I just hate the sound. Is light pinging necessary with a Troyer tune? I wonder if a person could ask for a little less horsepower and no pinging at all.

If you hate it that much you have two choices

1) Turn the radio up
2) get a flowmaster 40 series

Or you could just do the right thing and fix it, but who has time for that?

I have used 87 perf and 91 perf tune with ABSOLUTELY NO PINGING and my truck screams like hell @ full throttle

Sorry to hear that a few ping (maybe bunk gas is suspect) but the vast majority of posts that I've read/searched reported no problems.

And asking for a "little less horsepower" from Mike is borderline blasphemous

Oh yeah, my Air Force 1 is scheduled for deliverly today....

Like i said with my truck the only time it pings is when i first punch the peddle from a complete stop and just for a split second. After that there is no ping even at WOT and up through all the shifts. If I dont punch it it never pings. In fact i put it back to stock and ir still did it but no where near as noticable. Asked the dealer about it, we took a truck from the lot same year and it did the same thing. So who knows.

Mine hasn't pinged with the stock program - and it was unusually gutless so pinging on anything but year old gas would have been enough to send me to the dealer for some fixing on the house.

My pinging is 1/2 seconds or less in duration ond only occurs in park/neutral or in 1st when first taking off with considerable throttle applied suddenly. I would say if the pinging persists for more than 1/2 seconds you should take it
quite seriously and throttle back a bit right now or seek help from someone who knows enough about detonation in the engines to guide you correctly.

I am pleased now. I was very apprehensive about the pinging. After Mike 'splained some of the tuning methodology to me and comforted my pinging concerns I finally felt comfortable with putting it between the lines and feeding the floor with some pedal. As Mike had advised, there was a little shrill of short duration when it upshifted to 3rd and just after that I had to prematurely end the fun as I was in a 45 where everybody drives 55.

I am running the last of some 89 octane Citgo down so I can put 1/2 tank or so of 93 octane ( if the loan goes through ) and see how things are when the truck is eating correctly!

Hi Rooster2005,

Thanks very much for your post, I enjoyed speaking with you at length!

For those who are reading this, what we are talking about is a very simple issue that also occurs on about 1/4 to 1/3 of these 5.4 3V vehicles even on the stock factory program when running 87 octane - and that is a coupla-few quick individual pings when you first nail the throttle that immediately stops - nothing more. We're not talking about any kind of ongoing detonation or anything that would be of concern and need correcting.

Thanks again for all your time the other day Rooster2005 - I always enjoy getting a chance to speak with owner like you when we both have the time, & have fun with your truck!
