Tuner questions

I have an 05 with the 4.6 and 4x4,I have an xcal1 now and am thinking about getting a newer/better unit.I am not crazy about my xcal1 for many reasons like the blasted pinging I get when ever the motor is under any kind of load and forget it if the ac is on.(Yes I did try stock program and no pinging)
Any way with the 4.6 what is going to get me the most out of it?
I am also going to get an airforce1 at the same time no matter what I get and a cat back is in the near future.

Might be a knock sensor setting -- this is a pretty easy tweak for who ever tuned your vehicle...

I, for one, went from an XCal1 to an XCal2. The difference in feel wasn't huge but, I did gain a tuner that was far easier to deal with from the standpoint of having a screen, being able to read engine codes, and a tune that gets more out of my engine than an off the shelf style of tune.

Hi Bronx1,

Well, remember that while the XCalibrator 2 is a much more advanced unit, that has nothing to do with why your vehicle is pinging - which is, I suspect, because it is running dead lean from the factory and that, combined with additional spark advance, could well be causing your problem.

Every single 2005 & up 4.6 F-150 we have ever tuned has run at roughly 15.0:1 A/F in bone-stock trim from the factory - and I personally know of chipmakers who do things like command a far richer A/F than is appropriate as a band-aid to try to remedy that - which is, of course, completely inappropriate. The only way to handle that properly is to do it in the MAF transfer function.

Another thing to remember is that you need to do your part - meaning, no matter whether it's an XCal 2 or the original XCalibrator, you need to make sure you are using only the very best quality fuels and have proper datalogging done and get that info to your tuner so they can make any corrections that may be necessary.

Remember, while it behooves everyone to have the XCalibrator 2's additional features by a long shot, it's not the hardware that determines the results - it's the actual *tuning* inside that determines how the vehicle runs.

Just to give you an idea of what we get for results from the 2005 & up 4.6 F-150's, with just the AF1 and our tuning, the 4.6's put down as much horsepower to the rear wheels as a stock 5.4 3V F-150 does (though it won't make quite as much torque down low) - so the 4.6 can certainly be improved upon.

If you'd like to explore maybe doing a trade-up deal with us to have us get you into the XCalibrator 2 and proper tuning for that vehicle, please feel free to give us a call at our number listed below.

Best of luck whatever you decide,
