How to tell if used truck is chipped?

The 2001 5.4L 4x4 I just bought has a SuperChips sticker on it. Don't know if it's its chipped or the previous owner just put the decal on it to look 'cool'. Appreciate any info on where to look.

That would be the passenger side kick panel.

But if its flashed there is no physical evidence of that.

Cant you get the prev owners number from your dealer and call them?

If you suspect it has been "chipped", the pcm will show evidence of the protective coating being removed from the contacts in the slot on the back if the chip has been removed. If it has been flashed, there will be no physical evidence and you would most likely need to get in touch with the previous owner or a dealer might be able to check it out. If it had been flashed and the previous owner was smart, he would have returned the truck to stock or else he would be stuck with a useless tuner because it would still be locked to your truck.

That would explain why I didn't see anything on the driver's side! I'll look at the other side tonight. : )

This truck idles around 1300 , can I turn that down myself ?

No, that's in the tune, you can't adjust it yourself, at least not properly. And that's not normal, you might have something wrong.

Hi Tim,

Look ABOVE the passenger's side kick panel, for a rectangular-shaped aluminum box - it's 1.5 inches thick by 6 inches high by 9 inches long.

If it is chipped, you will see a chip on the back of the PCM, a blue module in obvious sight.

If it was flashed instead of chipped, you won't know that without talking to the previous owner in most cases - and it's extremely rare for any owner to leave their flash tuning in a PCM - instead, they return it to stock and either use the tuner on their next F-150, or sell it outright to recoup some money from it - they virtually never just give it away.

So unless you find a blue module sticking off the back of your PCM there above the passenger's kick panel, you do not have a chip installed.

If a chip ever was installed, with careful examination, you *might* be able to see where the conformal coating was removed from the J3 connector, but without knowing what it looked like before, you probably won't be able to tell it - unless whoever installed it did it gorilla-handed.

In short - it's doubtful you have a chip installed, though the previous owner probably did.

And no, you cannot adjust the idle speed properly, that must be done in the tune - now on cold start, and for a few minutes after a cold start, of course it will idle up higher, as much as 1800 rpms - but then it settles back down to well below 1000 rpm. Now your tach could be off, =or you may have a mechanical problem, which might be why the previous owner got rid of it, seeing as how it's out of warranty most likely. talk to whoever you bought the truck from about the idle speed problem and have this taken care of under whatever kind of warranty you got from buying it used - I hope it was purchased from a dealership so that you have at least a 30 days used satisfaction warranty, with at least a 50-50 coverage of parts & labor.

Without knowing more, that's really about the best I can tell you, other than to say good luck, & we hope you enjoy your F-150!
