I see in the online store section that there are Superchips programmers for the "2004 Heritage 4.2L V6 models only." Will that work on a 2001 4.2L V6?

Sorry, no.

It's pretty clear in saying that it's for the "2004 Heritage 4.2L V6 models only." So that means what it says, 2004 models only - that is the only model year of 4.2 V6 F-150 ever included to date in the Superchips "MAX" series Micro Tuners, is the 2004.

So for the 1997-2003 4.2 V6 F-150's, the hot tip is to get in on our custom tuning Group Buy going on right now, it ends this coming Friday March 10th - that is what will get you the best results for tuning, and it's delivered in the XCalibrator 2, which has far more advanced features compared to the 1714 unit you are talking about.
