Tow Tune vs. Performance Tune
Tow Tune vs. Performance Tune
Okay as far as tuners are concerned (be it Edge, Xcal 2, or what-have-you), what is the difference between a tow tune and a performance tune, or even just an optimized tune. Say for example running 87 octane, how do each of these tunes differ with no octane change. It is simple timing and shift points? Anyone have any imput on this? ASE mechanic? Troyer?
some info
higher octane tune will have more spark advance -the tow tunes will have more fuel to run lower egt's[exhaust gas temps] while under load-shift points and characteristics may be changed based on your code- best bet is to call mike troyer with your code and tell him what you will like to achieve- he will go over everything in detail on all the characteristics of your code-phil

Openclass,
Thanks for the advice. However, chances are I may not go with troyer. I have an opportunity to get a custom tuning done for less in my own back-yard--well almost. I've beenworking with these guys for months and I told them about Troyer's group buy and they said they would beat it.
My hope is to be able to talk to the technician about optimizing the tune for towing and performance in 87 and higher octane--much like Troyer's. What I lack is the mechanical know-how to put that into terms that a technician can fully understand.

Mike has been doing this for years.
You definately won't regret paying a little extra to get one from him.

Go with the guys in your backyard and be happy.
****acola,
I'm not sure if you are familiar with the members of this forum and what they believe, but here is a link to a very interesting thread posted by (98Navi) one who did not believe in TP or the XCal2. Please read the following thread:
https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=228939
Who you get to tune your vehicle is ultimately noone's choice but your own. I would encourage you to be certain that the tune you receive is safe as well as impressive. With Troyer, you can always sleep at night knowing that the tune you receive is safe and not damaging/ straining your vehicle where other tuners may.
I have the XCal2 for my F150 from TP and am extremely happy with his tunes, as well as the hundreds of other members on this site are. I too, have a 2006 GT Mustang that I have discussed with Mike as well as my local Mustang tuner (who Troyer spoke very highly of) and when it comes time to tune the GT, it too will be done by TP as well.
You choose the tuner that you feel comfortable with. Ask a lot of questions from any tuner that you decide to use. And by all means, talk to TP before you make your final decision.
Regards,
Greenhaw

Green,
Thanks for the input. Yes I am familiar with the ideals of the members of this forum. I also read other forums as well. As Asinatra said, I --well most members included-- only know "troyer's" tuning. So, based on the sole opinions of the members of this forum, I should go with Troyer? Look I know he has a good reputation. Shoot I have chatted back and forth with him on threads like this before. I'm really not questioning his work when compared to others. But when it comes right down to it, if I can get a comparable product for a comparable price and I live 10 minutes from the Speed Shop, I'm 9 times out of 10 going to go with who I know. I've dealt with these guys for some time now and they have been around longer than most other performance companies. Their reputation across many forums stands as a good litmus. --Again, not anything against Troyer--in fact I still hold him in high regard as a tuner. Just not for me on this truck. Consider that when I lift the truck, change gears, fart in the upholstery--I'll have to get another tune, dyno, all that. With these guys I show up and it's done in an hour or two. No waiting, no seperate dyno costs, nada. I got the instructions on how to datalog and all that needed to be done by me, and I thought isn't this what I'm paying you to do? My $0.02...
Silver,
In my backyard was an expression. It most certainly could not be done in a back yard...unless it was mike troyer's where he probably has a dynamometer next to the swimming pool!

Hey Guys,
Just relax - some people's minds you just aren't going to change - the best bet is to simply ignore them.
I suggest that those who have decided that someone else is more qualified to do their tuning get their advice from their tuner, instead of expecting people here to answer questions that are only *properly* answered by the individual tuner doing the actual work! Actually, someone who doesn't even know the basics of this really isn't in a position to make quality judgments on any tuner's work.
Look, everyone has a right to use whoever they want - absolutely - and those who have their mind made up need to go get their answers from the individual they decided is going to do their tuning - not come here trying to second-guess their own tuner.
Additionally, some are here only to turn these boards into a war zone, or have an obvious agenda, or simply cannot hide their two-faced behavior - like asintra's numerous efforts, for example, while have rewarded him with a clear "red" code for his "reputation" in his public listing here. He's had numerous posts of his edited/removed, threads deleted, claiming no "affiliation" with a competitor whose link he deliberately placed in his signature line in a gross violation of the rules here, etc. I think it's a riot the way he portrays himself, as if everyone didn't clearly know exactly what he's really up to - and of course, at the very same time, **he's sending me emails asking me for a quote to tune his truck** - which will never happen.
Just don't let them get to you - let everyone do what they want, and wish them well in the process - so that way everyone's happy.

You lost a lot of respect in my book by trying to personally attack me here. By making broad generalizations and assuming what you dared not ask, you let your ego get in the way of your brain. As a businessman myself, I would never do that. Best of luck to you.

C.
