Intake???

May be the wrong category but this seams to be the spot for performance ??

Has anyone installed a cover on their K&N intake kit. I saw in a magazine a dry slip on cover made by K&N that slide over the filter on the fipk II and it is supposed to increase the interval between cleanings. I'm not trying to get lazy with maintenance jsut keep the bugs from getting lodged into the filter so that I can't get them out

Yeah, it's called a pre-filter. One that is like a slip cover and another that is foam that goes around the filter itself. It captures smaller particles BEFORE they hit the filter allowing for longer intervals between cleaning. they are close to 40 bucks I believe. I bought one for my AIRAID.

Did it take away any performance or any sound?

I don't think it makes a very noticeable difference at all. I feel better that I am protecting my engine from dirt/dust becasue you can't have a high flow of air and all of it be clean. Also when I go to the mud, it helps keep the filter clean and all I have to remove and clean is the pre-filter. It's a compromise. I noticed that the Pre-filters seemed like they came out after TRU-FLOW(a foam filter competitor) advertised that tha K&N was allowing more dirt into the engine causing possible damage over a period of time. And to me it seems like the pre-filters appeared shortly after. (I could be wrong) I believe the pre-filter would not only help pre-clean the air that is filtered(keeping your engine internals cleaner) as well as extends the life of your expensive filter and increases the intervals between cleanings. Be aware that some have had a Check Engine Light(CEL) go off because the Mass Air Flow(MAF) sensor gets a thin film of oil from the filter "conditioner". Other than that I do have a pre-filter and I think it's a good idea for any High Flow filter application.Just my opinion.
