Where to get the "EGR" cleaned?
Where to get the "EGR" cleaned?
When i ordered the XCAL2, one of mike's suggestion for maintence on the truck was to get the EGR tract cleaned, as well as DPFE sensor replaced and of course spark plugs, wires and coil packs. I just called a muffler shop which i thought might be able to clean the EGR tract, but they said it was an emission thing, and that they dont deal with them at that type of garage. Where are you supposed to get the EGR tract cleaned if you are unable to do it yourself. (i cant do it myself because i dont have any tools, a place to do it, or even the confidence to do it myself) If anybody can give me a suggestion on what type of place to call to get that service done, that'd be great. by the way, i'm going to a ford dealership on tuesday next week to get my cruise control hooked back up and an oil change, can they perform that type of service? Thanks for all help and imput!

John, the dealer can take care of all your desires but open the wallet wide.
They may choose to replace the EGR, DPFE and other related parts, so it can go either way once you agree to contract for your work requests..
Good luck and come back and tell us how it went.

Hi John,
Thanks for your post - any time we tune a vehicle, we go over the maintenance section of our CPW's (custom program worksheets) carefully, and will make recommendations where we feel they will be helpful, and/or needed - and that usually happens on vehicles with some significant mileage on them, generally speaking.
Cleaning out the EGR tract is not hard to do, and yes, your local Ford dealership can easily take care of this for you. As long as the amount of EGR flow is fine, the DPFE sensor doesn't *have* to be replaced, it's just that they typically tend to have a useful service life of anywhere from 70-90K miles on average - although in my Lightning, about 15K miles seems to be the average lifespan so far, but that's an exception.
Anyway, you don't absolutely HAVE to replace the DPFE sensor if it hasn't failed, we simply mention that at a certain mileage level, so that you won't be surprised if it goes out - it can cause some *very* odd symptoms, like not wanting to start when it's been raining, idle problems, & all sorts of other strange symptoms - which is why we generally recommend replacing it at least by 100 K miles - though some people get lucky and they last 150K or more miles, go figure!
Cleaning the EGR tract, making sure you have a fresh fuel filter (not more than 15K miles) and fresh upstream O2 sensors (not more than 50K miles) are some of the more important things to help the engine run it's best, get good performance & fuel economy.
You can also tell your Ford dealer not to automatically replace any sensors without checking with you first, or tell them not to go beyond a certain dollar amount, etc - there are numerous ways of protecting yourself from a shocking repair bill, so don't let that scare you away from doing proper maintenance - it's amazing how much better these trucks run with a clean EGR tract, as it tends to accumulate a lot of deposits that look like stalactites & stalagmites, etc.
This is just some general FYI info - good luck, & if you have any questions feel free to call us.
