If I may.
I am running Mikes E-fans, Air Force 1, magnaflow muffler, and of course his custom tunes on my '04 4x4 Supercrew. I spend a lot of time on the highway which gives me the chance to experiment a little.
My best gas mileage comes on the 93 performance tune in the warmer summer months when the fuel has no "winter additives" in it. It is common for me to get 18+ mpg running at 70-75 mph using the cruise.
The second best is with the 93 towing tune under the same conditions where I commonly see 16-17 mpg., and then with the 87 tow where I get 16-16.5 mpg.
Presently while using the "winter blends" I loose 2 to 2.5 mpg from the above numbers.

** I also am running a 295/70/17" tire on a 17x9 rim which puts a large
footprint on the road.

Hi Slowrancher,

Well, when you are looking *purely* for fuel mileage, then mods like the electric fans & underdrive pulleys generally do the most good - you get power gains as well as mpg gains from the reduction in "parasitic" losses. A low-restriction intake should be in the list as some point as well, especially in the 5.4 3V F-150's their stock intake is extremely restrictive, especially in the rpm ranges most owner tend to drive in, which are the low to mid-rpm ranges. The intake giving the best results on the 5.4 3V F-150's is the Air Force One.

While I am also a fan of exhaust mods, we generally do not see a "significant" improvement in MPG from making say, a muffler change or cat-back exhaust systems -for example, the best cat-back exhaust (Magnaflow) in terms of HP & part-throttle torque gains, which is also what is going to do the best in terms of potential for MPG improvement on the exhaust side, is about .5 mpg on average - a few have reported 1.0 mpg, but it tends to be more on the .5 mpg side on average from the typical exhaust mods.

So for mpg, e-fans, underdrive pulleys & the intake would be the areas to focus on first for best results. Most people with our E-fan kit & underdrive pulleys tend to report back with 1.5-2.5 mpg gains from those 2 mods, just to give you a rough idea of the average.

I hope that info helps, & feel free to call us to go over any more details, etc. on this.

Was i wrong in thinking that the exhaust would help the intake?let me ask this, does the intake,or will do its job without the exhaust, because really i dont care about the exhaust, inless i can get milage out of it.

Slowrancher,

The intake will do it's job without the exhaust system upgrade. The exhaust system will be minimal in terms of performance and fuel economy. The main difference with the exhaust is sound quality.
