A little help

I have a 2005 supercab with a 4.6. I would like to achieve a couple things. Improve the gas mileage, I drive 90 miles a day and I set cruise at 70 and am getting between 16.5 and 17 mpg. I would also love to do something that would add more power for when I want it. I put the flow master 40 on with dual tips and I like the sound and it seemed to release a few ponies out of the engine. Anything sugeested would be appreciated. Looking for simple fixes not major rebuild type stuff.
Thanks Eric.

Welcome to the board!

I've got a '05 FX4 Supercrew with the 5.4L engine and 3.73 LS gears. I normally get 12-13 MPG in the city, and I can get as good as 18.5 MPG on the highway going 65-70 MPH with 4 people in the cab and ~500 pounds of gear in the bed. Here are a few of things I did that helped my fuel economy:

1. Get a lightweight tonneau cover. The Undercover was my choice. I gained about 1 MPG improvement on the highway with the cover.

2. Get a tuner. I bought an Edge Evolution last December, and I've seen an improvement of 2+ MPG in the city. (I haven't had the chance to use my Edge on an extended highway trip yet, so I can't provide any info about highway mileage improvement.) The Edge also includes the ability to monitor your engine's instantaneous gas mileage, so you have instant feedback on your particular driving style. The performance boost you get from the Edge is excellent, too!

3. Slow down. These are heavy trucks, and they aren't the most aerodynamic vehicle on the road. Lower speeds = less drag = better fuel economy.

Good Luck!

I agree with the EDGE statement. I picked up 2MPG HWY with my EDGE programmer over the Superchips tuner. 5.4/3.73 Screw.

Welcome to the board.

1st. drop your mph by about 5 and see how that helps. Anything above about 60-65 drastically lowers your mileage.

2nd. Another vote for edge evolution turner. I've gotten about 1.5 - 2mpg increase in city driving.

Hi Eric,

These F-150's are of course not known for great gas mileage, and what you're getting right now is not bad for those speeds.

That being said, we are well known for getting better fuel mileage from these vehicles from our custom tuning, which goes further in depth than anything else on the market, by far.

We can also do an MPG-specific tune for you, if you like.

We provide a set of 3 different custom tunes, set up for each individual vehicle owner's preferences and needs, and provide them in the most advanced hand-held tuner on the market, with complete enhanced parameter manufacturer-specific diagnostics and the fastest & widest-ranging datalogging capabilities available.

One thing you should know is that NOBODY can make any iron-clad guarantees of better fuel mileage no matter what - the truth is, that actually depends on far too many factors beyond the tuner's control, such as how the vehicle is operated, and the quality of fuel being used -

Our customers typically report about 2 more mpg in these newer F-150's, with some getting as much as 3.5 more mpg - this will depend primarily on how you drive it and the quality of fuel used, of course, as always. You can see many posts in this section from customers of ours for years & years who have posted solid mpg gains from our tuning.

We have specialized in tuning the F-150 platform longer than anyone else, over 14 years, and have custom-tuned more F-150's than anyone, which is why most people come to us for their F-150 tuning & other performance needs.

If you'd like to get more information on the most advanced custom tuning to get the best tuning results from your F-150, please give us a call at our number listed below & we'll be happy to go over all the details with you, with no sales pressure - just facts - then you can make your decision from a fully informed position.

Thanks for your post, & best of luck with your truck!
