I purchased the Superchips 1714 for my 4.6 L V8 and the difference is astounding! The 1714 comes with 3 tunes 87 octane, Towing 91 octane and High Performance 91 octane. You can adjust the shift points, engine rev and speed limiter very easily. I just took the defaults and my truck runs like a scalded dawg.

Read through this forum and use the 'search' feature to look at what others are saying. This is definitely a "Pro-Troyer" forum but the folks on this forum have tried alot of variations and are also very helpful. At the end of the day, it all comes down to the basic consumer formula: cost x benefit = Perceived Value.

I personally have never purchased anything from Troyer but from what I can tell. He is very knowledgeable and their customer service seems to be good based on responses. I just rather work with someone local, so i can have one throat to choke if they mess up anything on my truck and contribute to our local small businesses.

It is worth your time to do your own DD and ask questions. However, I will say that it is totally WORTH IT to 'tune' your truck as you will be amazed at the difference. For less than $1,200, you can put on an intake, Cat-Back exhaust and performance tune your truck to run like it should.

Good luck in your research and when you make your mods post your impressions here for others to read.

Right on drnasty! The point I have conveyed all along. Do some research on all the available units and choose which one you like best. There are many available, from the xcal2 you'll read about here to the predator by diablosport and hypertech and so forth.

I am like drnasty, I use a local company, which just about everyone has heard of, Dugan Racing. But I use a chip, not a programmer, since I have a 98. Also, I don't see the need for all this "custom tuning" on a truck without many mods. An out of the box tune will suffice for a truck without some mods.

Good luck!

98 navi,
on my old 03 sc 4x4 3.55 ,5.4
i had:
3" magnaflow catback
mac intake
first i had a diablosport custom chip - reburned "3" times to rid speed limiter with no avail- this setup dynoed on a mustang "loaded" dynoed 228 rwhp @ at low 4300 rpms due to tuner not being able to rid limiter-BS!
tq was 300 ftlbs @ 3800 rpms

next i tried a 1715 off the shelf sct tuner- not quite as strong as diablo tune but no speed limiter at least & shifts were better.
i had mike troyer do me a 3 stg tune for my lga2 code-i didn't dyno it but with a full tank of gas in it , 90 degrees temps and near 90% humidity dropped [ 4/10ths] off the best time i did with diablo tune-1/4 tank of gas, low 40's for temps & 50 percent humidity- now i realize i didn't tank it to the strip on the same day- but it was worse conditions for best et times with mikes tune plus i had a full tank of gas and major wheel spin, the biggest noticeable edge mikes tune had over the sct base tuner and motorhaven's tuning of diablo chip was part throttle torque-it was simply amazing- his gains over the spread of the powerband was exactly what a normal driver needs in these heavy trucks, not just peak numbers where no driver really stays- my .02$ phil

I definitely like the shifts with the 1715 Hi-Perf tune. These shifts are what your transmission is supposed to run like from the factory. I'm sure ford has its reasons for penning up the available hp on these motors but i'm at a loss to understand.

Anyhow, it comes down to your personal preference. At the end of the day, i'm not gonna race any one on this forum.... maybe a few z-71's tho.

Apparently, my wife is not part of that demographic. She used to run my old 69 Camero wide open all the dang time. My friends would call me and tell me they saw a black streak going down the road with blonde hair flapping in the wind.

HI skater1107,

"The best?" That would be our custom tuning - hands down, we gain more power, have better driveability, etc.

Feel free to take some time reading posts here, as you will quickly find most people come to us due to the fact that we have specialized in performance tuning the F-150 longer than anyone else in the business, 14+ years.

You can have tunes for multiple levels of octane, not just one - so yo can have 87 octane tuning as well as more powerful tuning for premium fuel if you ever want to use it.

If you are looking for "cheap" rather than best, then that is another ,matter, I would say just call us and pick up one of our standard tuners, but if you actually want the best F-150 tuning, that is our Troyer Performance custom tuning.

Please feel free to give us a call and we'll be happy to go over this with you in detail so you';ll actually know what is involved, and can then make your decision from a fully informed position.

Enjoy your New Years, & best of luck whatever you decide!
