New 1714 Installed Today
Oh my Gawd!
SCT 1714 installed and Hi-Performance tuned in 20 minutes following the instructions. Let me tell you folks sumthin', my truck leaped for joy! My truck has a few minor mods on her 4.6L V8... K&N intake, SIDO cat-back full boar exhaust and now the 1714.... the circle is complete.
When I cranked it up I was a little skeptical as nothing seemed different as I let it idle a couple of minutes. Then I pulled out of my neighborhood and gave it a little punch to half throttle to see if the tune was working.... my truck leaped for joy as it downshifted to first and jumped into second at HALF THROTTLE. You could imagine the exhillaration I felt. I took her to the nearest interstate on ramp and dropped tha hammer on 'er.
Folks this truck held first gear to 40 mph and then ran 2nd up to 75 mph before shifting to 3rd!? Tooo late out of on-ramp.... might as well let her go for more! At 90 mph I had to let off of her but she wanted more..... I think she may have been disappointed that 'I went easy on her'
My truck shifts much quicker and more precisely.. no more slipping into gear, just a quick shift and my truck literally leaps into the next gear begging for more throttle. The motor sounds down right mean under the hood. Very strong sounding... like a truck with a V8 should.
I put her in 4-wheel Lo and MAN! I can't do that too much as I'll have to buy new tires every other week. She laid rubber from all 4 tires and just boiled the tires. I dropped her in the mud she just ate it up like it was gourmet.
I will keep y'all informed as I go through the paces this week but my first report is, right on! This baby CAN run!
If you're on the fence about this investment, let me tell you that it is WORTH IT if you want your truck to run like a mean Ford should. I'm itching to find me a Z-71 to jump on.

I used the superchips recommended settings on all parameters. Gear shifting isn't too harsh at all.... just very precise. All the slipping that you experience from the Ford factory tune is gone. When I floor it, my truck now shifts between 4700 and 5000 rpm and it jumps into gear. Nothing like a shift kit though.
I took my wife for a ride this evening for my 'wife test'. She had white knuckle syndrome the entire time... all she kept saying was this thing is going to get you in trouble. She said she was going to have to set aside $$ for the speeding tickets. I assured her I would be on my best behavior.
I felt a little performance increase from the exhaust mods and then some more from the new intake but the most noticable gains came when I put in the tune. My goal was to make modifications slowly to learn what I liked, budget out the $$ and get it to its current performance level. The way my truck runs now is what I envisioned when I began this little journey. I'm going to run a few tanks of gas through it and then take it down to be dyno'ed to see where it nets out.
Its amazing what a few low $$ mods will do for these trucks.
My truck now runs and sounds Down Right Nasty!

I personally think that the "Superchips" setting on the 1714 for the shift pressure is too harsh. When the shift pressure is all the way up, the 1-2 upshift was brutal... cant see how that could be anything but BAD for my trans... I'm sure some will dispute that. I dropped the shift pressure on the 1-2 down a couple PSI and it was "perfect"....
But hey, everyone has the own perceptions and opinions..

It doesn't seem too brutal to me. From 1st to 2nd it just shifts very quickly between 4700 - 4900 rpm. I would consider brutal to be associated with a clanking noise at the point that it shifts. I had a Camero with a 400 turbo that had too much pressure and it clanked when it shifted gear. I didn't know better at the time (about 25 years ago) and ended up blowing out 2nd gear.
All in all the mods I made to my truck have delivered more than I expected and for amazingly low $$.
What do you consider brutal?
