First Tankful since XCal...

Since purchasing our truck last June, we've only averaged better than 12mpg once - the trip home from where we picked up the truck, 250 miles? south...All freeway. Since, the truck has been regulated to in-town, with very few (fewer than 60 on average) freeway miles per tank.

We were VERY happy to see our last tankful went thru at 14mpg, using the 91 Octane Perf tune supplied by Troyer. This has us feeling pretty good for a couple reasons:

1) I've been hot-rodding the ba-jeezus out of the truck since for this tank
2) We've seen 2mpg on the PERF tune - Makes us a bit excited to see the increase we'll achieve using the as-yet-not-installed 87 Octane Economy Tune.

Thanks again Troyer for a great product!

Hi DMP,

Excellent, glad to hear of the 2 MPG gain!

As you pointed out of course, how the vehicle is operated certainly affects the mileage as well, and fuel quality, specifically the BTU content, is critical (which is why we harp on it so much! ).

I wouldn't expect any *additional* gain on the 87 octane tune over what you are getting right now on your premium gas performance tuning. Typically you will almost always see your best MPG on the highest octane tunes (assuming an equal BTU content on each level of octane), due to the additional spark advance, which lowers the load on the motor & thus improves it's efficiency. So the general pattern is to see the highest MPG on the highest octane tuning. Just FYI.

Thanks for your post & enjoy your tuning!

Ahh...so the benefit to the 87 octane tune is we're paying less for gas. Of course, it'll still run better than it did w/ the factory tune too! Gotcha! thanks!

I can't wait to see what (if any) mpg gain I get from the 87 octane tune from my 1714. Right now, I'm having too much fun the with the 91 High Perf program.

Hi DMP,

Yes, I'd say that is basically correct, in terms of the fuel mileage thing - when using the 87 octane program, any increase *at all* in MPG automatically saves you some money for gas, as you are just buying regular gas.

And of course, especially in the 2004 & newer 5.4 3V trucks, the performance gain we get on 87 octane is still impressive.

Have fun!
