Is shift kit necessary w/ TP tuning

I am about to order the X-Cal from TP. Will the Transgo shift kit help with shifting or will the XCal take care of all of that making the shift kit unnecessary?

You'll be plenty happy with the shifting after you install the XCal on its own.

No. You will be happiest with the FactoryTech sep. plate kit.

I did the line valve mod on my Lightning when Mike did the xcal tune for it bout a year ago. This was changin the line pressure modulating valve in the valve body, simple and straight foward mod. This alone was great for shifting but add his tuning to the equaton and u get a very happy person.

Put another way, it is more desireable to make the valve body mod than to force the trans into higher line pressure from the PCM program, for attaining firmer shifting..

Agree! I got the FTVB before they introduced the plate, and that is the way to go IMHO

HI!... I'm running a built trans with a custom valve body with a TRANS-GO shift kit set at it's highest setting. MIKE T has also cranked my shift firmness "WAY" above the stock SUPERCHIP setting. Even though I can break the NITTO 305's loose on a 1ST to 2ND gear upshift and sometimes on the 2ND to 3RD upshift, I still want it harder! LOL!!!!!!!

HI Greenhaw,

As you can see, there are plenty of opinions on this.

You have a 2003 truck it appears, so what I *strongly* recommend is this - if you want your truck to consistently chirp the tires on a full-throttle 1-2 upshift, then yes, go with our Transgo shift kit along with our custom tuning, so the tranny can fill the clutches quick enough to chirp the tires.

The Transgo kit is the shift kit that we recommend if you want to do that type of mechanical modification - we feel that it does a far better job than any other such modification for these transmissions, and you'll get far better support from the manufacturer, too.

In our tuning, in many cases we can make it "chirp" the tires at full-throttle on the 1-2 upshift, but we do not TRY to do that via tuning alone, as I do not agree with doing it that way - if that happens with our tuning, that's OK, but we do not *deliberately* try to make every truck do that, as we feel the safest way to do that is thru a *combination* of the tuning mods to take care of the electronic issues and then the mechanical mods to allow the transmissions to be physically capable of flowing enough fluid volume in a short enough period of time.

So what it really gets down to is how hard do you want the transmission to shift at full-throttle? Do you want your truck to "chirp" the tires on the full-throttle 1-2 upshift (like a lot of us do)? If so, then do the Transgo shift kit alone with our custom tuning (we do combo deals on those, and the Transgo shift kit is very affordable), and that way you will end up with a nice progressive shift characteristic that gets progressively tighter & quicker & harder as you give it more & more throttle, culminating in a nice "chirp" (slight amount of spin) of the tires on the WOT (Wide-Open Throttle) 1-2.

We recommend setting the Transgo kit up on it's "middle" level (it offers 3 levels), and with 2 washers for the 1-2 shift - this is all covered in the docs, and this configuration allows us to make the tranny shift any way we want to in the tuning - way-hard everywhere, or nice & progressive as most people like - most people prefer a little bit softer shift on very light throttle, so they can still drive in mud, snow & ice, or just not have their necks jerked back on light throttle (that really isn't appropriate unless you are hard-core) and then as you give it more and more throttle, a progressively harder shift leading up to a nice tire-chirping WOT 1-2, just like it really should be, so that is the configuration we prefer to accomplish that.

It's a matter of doing this *safely* for your tranny and just how hard you want it to hit the gears at heavy throttle - we can set it up any way you like, this is one of many things we go over with you when you place your order for our custom tuning and you fill out our CPW's (Custom Program Worksheets).

Now if you have the 4R100 transmission instead (and that is seen generally in the 1999-2003 Expeditions and only in the heaviest-duty F-150's (usually the 6-lug F-150's in the 1997-2003 model year range) and Lightnings & Harleys), then you can simply use our larger diameter LMV (line modulation valve) to accomplish making the tranny physically capable of filling the clutches quick enough to get a nice tire-chirping type of shift. That too, is very simple to use, and is what you see many Lightning owners do, like Micky here in this thread mentioned doing for his Lightning we tuned.

The bottom line is I recommend giving us a call to go over this, so we can give you a good idea of exactly what to do for your specific vehicle based o what you want your truck to shift like, OK? Our number is listed just below for your convenience.

Good luck, & talk to you soon!
