Guru needed. chip or tune?
Guru needed. chip or tune?
sorry for the newbie question, i have been reading a lot but cant find an answer. the question is:
do i have the diablo piggyback chip from my old 97 f150 (totaled in hurricane wilma) reprogrammed for my new 01 f150 supercrew 4.6 auto. or ebay it and go with a tuner/programmer? the chip made a pretty good difference in the old truck, but will the tuner get me more? and is it worth the price difference? i am not sure what it would cost to redo the diablo, but i dont think it would be too bad.
any help would be appriciated

For me, I put chips in both of my Mark VIIIs because there is pretty much only one way I drive them, but a truck is a multi-purpose vehicle, and I want to be able to choose the appropriate tune for what I am doing. If you just have a high performance tune and have to do some heavy towing, I think you are asking for trouble.

You can get a towing tune, a performance tune, etc. suited to your needs.
You get three different tunes.
If you talk to Mike he can set up whatever it is you need.
Hi Keypilot,
Well, if your current chip is a single-program unit, I would recommend selling it and get into something far more modern and appropriate, as I personally do not believe in ANY kind of vehicle having only 1 program - that forces many compromises that just are not acceptable to me, or to most people who feel passionate about their vehicles or who want the best performance, the most flexibility and the best tuning for ALL the ways in which they use their vehicle.
If it's a multi-program unit, say, it has room for at least 3 or more programs, and you don't mind Diablo's tuning, then yes, you can have it retuned and enjoy it - it will cost you, of course.
Now here is where I'm probably going to sound like a self-promoting salesman, as the bottom line is, I suppose that is basically what I am!
If you want the *best* results from your new F-150 (and by the way, our condolences on losing your last F-150 in that hurricane, I hope nobody was hurt in your family!), that will be had by going with our Troyer Performance custom tuning.
In fact, for about the same or just a little bit more than you can have a multi-program Diablo chip *properly* tuned by an expert, you can get our #6600 custom chip loaded with 4 different CUSTOM programs, that will get you the most safe & sustainable power, and give the the ultimate flexibility to have things like towing tunes, tunes for different levels of octane, all-out performance tunes, you name it - for example, a lot of our 6600 (that's our 4-program custom chip) customers will go with an 87 octane towing tune and 87 octane performance tune, and then a premium gas towing tune and a premium gas maximum performance tune - that way they have the *ultimate* in flexibility with 4 of our Troyer Performance custom tunes, and we've specialized in performance tuning these F-150's longer than anyone else.
If your budget can handle it, I would really like to see you in our 9400, which is our 3-program custom hand-held tuner, which simply flashes your PCM in a couple of minutes via the OBD-II port, and has complete diagnostic capabilities INCLUDING all of the FoMoCo manufacturer-specific enhanced parameter monitoring & diagnostics, as well as a built-in high speed datalogger and completely modular design - and so many other features. And with the special discount you get from us because you are a registered member of F-150 Online, the 9400 is probably less than you think - it's just a thought, as you really should be aware of what our hand-held tuner can give you over what our custom chips can, which is all the extra features like diagnostics, datalogging, modular design, the future built in with updateable firmware, USB connectivity to your PC, etc., etc.
Now in terms of how your vehicle actually performs, it does not matter whether you go with our chip or our hand-held tuner, either way you get our Troyer Performance custom tuning - and it's the actual *tuning* that determines the results, and how your vehicle runs & responds.
I hope this brief info helps you a bit, & please feel free to give us a call to go over any of this in more detail, if you like.
Thanks for your post, hope your family is OK for the storm & best of luck with this next F-150!
