Advantages of a programmer

Hey guys,

I just bought a 2000 f-150 a few months ago and am looking to upgrade and mod this beast. It has the 4.6 in it which is enough power for me ( if there is such a thing). I was wondering about the advantages of a programmer as im in search of a lil more bottom end power. My truck has a 3.08 rearend as this kills acceleration. My truck wont even spin on dry pavement. I keep hearing about Mike and all the wonders he can do for our trucks. I kinda know what a programmer does but am not sure of all the features or which one is the best. Any info on what a programmer will do for my truck is appreciated. I already put in a K and N drop-in and 3" flowmaster exhaust. Any suggestions on programmers and what to do would be appreciated.

Ed

The Superchips Xcalibrator 2 with Troyer tuning is the bench mark. It makes these trucks run so much better.
Check out troyerperformance.com and sctflash.com.

Welcome to the forum f150driver86

In my opinion the XCal2 loaded with three custom tunes from Troyer Performance is the best mod I’ve ever done. It woke my truck up big time; made it fun to drive. If you troll around this forum a little and read what others say about the XCal2 and Mike’s tunes you’ll get the idea.

You can expect quite an improvement with a Troyer tune, Mike has the nack for livening these trucks up. Unfortionatly those 3.08 gears and the flowmaster exaust are not helping the low end at all. I found out too late about the Flowmaster although I like the sound it is'nt the best for performance in these trucks. But it will be on until it fails. I don't think the cost of another exaust would be worth the improvement that it would provide. The tune on the other hand will make a huge differance. Give Mike a call, get you're PCM code from you're computer or passenger door pillar before you call Mike and he can give you a better idea of the improvements that he can performe. People always talk about the HP gains but sometimes more important are the drivability issues that Mike fixes in his tune that really makes thes trucks shine. I hated the way my truck operated between the overdrive and torque converter lock up sceduals, I am located in Western Pa and we either go up hill or down hill, Mike worked on my tune and you would think you are in a differant truck, it doesen't do all that hunting between gears. And as a added bennefit I have seen much improved fuel economy.

By the way, can you recommend anyone in this area that can do installs on electric fans, underdive pulleys etc??

No guts to do engine work on my own

I do all of my work myself, most people don't want to install aftermarket type parts, unless you can find someone that has an interest in performance products and then they want an arm and a leg. The Troyer fan kit is very easy to install, it takes a little time to do a nice neet install but there is no Rocket sience involved, and his instructions go over and above in detail very easy to follow and do, plus the kit is complete exept for a little bling if you want to dress thing up.
Wish I was going down to Troyers with you, I would love to get him to dyno tune my truck, as good as he has made it through email tuning I can't even think how good it could be with his hands on it. Maybe this spring I can find a way to get there. Let us know how things turn out. I have never met Mike but talked to him at length on the phone. His knowledge of these truck is just awsome. Believe me when he's done the summit will just be a bump in the road!!!!!

I install aftermarket parts including e-fans. If you like we can discuss it at the dyno on November19th and 20th. I will be there both days...

Thanks for all the input fellas. Yeah i looked at Mike's website and from the looks of it, it seems to be the way to go. The site says that they will do a custom tune to fit your needs and so on. I know it will do some good but what can i expect out of the new tune. Im im not mistaken, you can do three diff. tunes. I mostly do around town driving so i want a more "seat of the pants" feel. I know gears would help my truck alot but i dont really want to change them. I guess my bottom line question is what can i expect from this new programmer w/ Mike's "special" tune? Any gains, low end power, ect.

Hi Ed,

Welcome to F-150 Online, and congrats on your new (to you) F-150!

What will get the best results is to have us do our custom tuning, and we do that in the XCalibrator 2 which is the most advanced & capable hand-held tuning device on the market.

It's not the programmer that makes the difference, it's the actual *tuning* inside the programming unit, and we have specialized in F-150 tuning longer than anyone else, which is why most owners come to us for our expertise.

Nobody can tell you exactly what your vehicle will do, as there is no way we can possibly know what kind of shape it is in, what power it's making right now, how old the O2 sensors are, the DPFE sensor & what kind of shape the EGR tract is by now, or any of a myriad of other things that dramatically affect the end results. So I suggest forget insisting someone be able to magically tell you exactly how much power you are going to gain, because nobody can do that - not honestly. Nor can anyone tell you just exactly what it's going to feel" like, as that is highly subjective.

The bottom line is, and the single most important thing to remember in all of this is quite simple - there is no better bang for the buck than a proper custom tune for these trucks, and for most other computer controlled vehicles in general, so that is where you want to start to improve the performance of your vehicle.

Assuming that vehicle were in brand new showroom condition and running perfectly,l we'd normally see about a 10%-12% increase in HP and about a 13% increase in torque on that 4.6 motor - and that is quite a bit of increase for a simple "bolt-on" part. In other words, think of how it will feel by imagining that you have about 10%-13% more motor under the hood, that is about the most accurate way to describe it on any vehicle as long as it's running decently that I have ever heard, if that helps you to get an idea.

But more importantly, you will have more horsepower and torque all the time, at any throttle position or rpm, and a better result from our tuning than any other modification costing the same or less - again, it's simply the single best bang for the buck, and that is why you see so many people here raving about it.

If you'd like to go over any of this in more detail, please feel free to give us a call at our number listed below & our staff will be happy to help you, OK?

Thanks for your post, & best of luck with your truck!

Thanks for the info Mike. It helped out alot. I just want to be sure for the $ 500 I would spend that it is gonna do me some good. I do understand about how nobody knows how the truck will react b/c they are all different. But if u say that it will feel like 13% more motor under the hood, im all in. Lemme get some funds together and i might just give y'all a call.

Thanks,
Ed

Hi Ed,

You're more than welcome - and by the way, you get a special discount as a registered member of F-150 Online on all of our tuning products, so your cost is significantly less than you see listed on our web site - just FYI.

If you'd like to know that specific pricing, please give us a call at our number listed below & our staff will be happy to go over that with you.

In the meantime, we hope you're enjoying your new truck!
