1714 Problems

Has anybody else had this problem?
I've got an 04 4.6L basically stock. I had to take it in to get a PCM update, so I unloaded the 1714 program and took the truck in. After the update my tuner didn't recognize the computer update. I sent the tuner back to SuperChips to be reprogrammed. 3 weeks later I have the tuner back but it won't download it's program. The unit keeps timing out and giving me a E-5F code. SuperChips keeps telling me to retry loading it and that it should work. Well, after 5 times it still won't. I checked the DTC's and I get the P1000; the truck needs to be driven more. It's been 700 miles since the PCM update, how many more miles do I need to drive?
Anybody got any suggestions?????

Every time you try to use the 1714 it's going to clear the PCM and cause a P1000 code until you drive it long enough for it to clear - so when you stop constantly reflashing (or trying to) your PCM, then you will stop getting the P1000 code - which is not an indication of any problem by the way, that also happens if you just disconnect the battery - all it means is that power has been interrupted to the PCM, that's' all - it doesn't change how the vehicle runs or drives at all.

With regard to whatever issue you are having with the 1714, you need to work directly with the manufacturer on that, they are the only ones who can solve that problem - nobody else can change anything inside that 1714, and what started all of this was you getting that PCM reflashed at the dealer - it obviously got flashed with a brand new code that was not in existence at the time that 1714 was manufactured - so it would have to wait until that unit got sent in to Superchip and they updated it with that code. It's always possible that there is a glitch happening during the process - so like I said, this cannot be solved here, you will have to continue to work directly with the manufacturer (Superchips) on this.

Good luck!

Mike,

Thanks for the info. The 1714 got sent back to Super Chips again yesterday. They are going to replace it with a new unit. Hopefully this one will work.

Thanks again.

Mike,

I too have a 4.6L and looking to get the superchips 1714. I have read a few threads and seen that my PCM needs to be reflashed due to ruff idle and poor acceleration. Now if i get it reflashed your saying that the 1714 will not work. My buddy is going to trade me for superchips tuner and I was wondering if I do need to get it updated, that it will be covered.

cpautovisionz,
That's what I took my truck in for, the rough idle. I'm not sure which update they did but after that the tuner wouldn't recognize the program. I called superchips and they were nice enough to reprogram the tuner for the cost of shipping, something like 12 bucks. When I got it back is when I got the new error code. They are now sending me a new tuner.

Mike,

How long should it take to clear the P1000 code?

GUYS,

I got my truck back from the dealership. They stated they had reflashed the PCM. I tried to install the superchips tuner again and I got an error code. Stating it needs to be upgraded. I have a 4.6L and tell you the truth, it did not fix the rough idle problem. Very dissapointed, should have left it alone. Now i am having so mucuhh trouble with the superchips tuner. Has anyone got the replacement tuner or upgrade? Does it work?

Mike,

Can you help me out? Or should I call superchips?

I agree, the reflash did nothing for the rough idle. I received my tuner back, again, from SuperChips and I still can't download the program. I'm still getting the E-5F code. Not sure what to do. SuperChips says the tuner is fine.
This really sucks.

This sucks! So you got the tuner back and still does not work? What are they going to do? Keep me posted. I am in the midst of sending the tuner back for an upgrade. But if you are stating this does not work. Then I do not know what to do.

Well, here we go again. I'm sending the tuner back to SuperChips for the 3rd time. Each time I try to install the program I get the E-5F code. As for the P-1000 code, I drove the truck about 400 miles over the weekend hoping that would be enough. I guess not.
I'm not sure what to think, is it the tuner or did the reflash do something to the truck. I wish someone could give me an answer.

Have you gotten this taken care of yet? I am very worried because I just ordered the 1714. I have a 2004 with 5.4L and still have the original factory flash (truck has never been reflashed). Am I going to have problems, or will I only have problems if I let the dealership flash the PCM? How long will Superchips be willing to continue "upgrading" the tuner, since there's always the chance that the dealer "might" flash the PCM without my knowledge in the future? Would it be best to just tell the dealer up front that he should not flash the PCM?

Sorry. I just saw them for $300 and decided to go for it. Kind of an impulsive buy...I just knew I would never need the Xcal2 since I don't plan on any other mods. The Xcal2 seems much better suited for those with a ton of mods, since it can be tailored to their particular setup. I also didn't like the fact that you are at the mercy of the person creating the tunes...plus having to pay for new tunes whenever new mods are added!

I have had the 1714 installed on my 04 for a few months now with no issues. My PCM was reflashed early for rough idle. I bought the unit of ebay for $175.00 and it has worked great without sending back to superchips. I guess it depends on our PCM/build date/and reflash version.....good luck!
