Question for Mike (1705 vs. Xcal1)

Mike,

My dad has a 7.3L PSD and he currently has the 1705. I have an XCal1 laying around that I'm not using.

1) will he get better gains from the XCal1?

2) if I use it to put my stock tune back in my truck, will it let go of my VIN and work in his truck?

3) Do you sell email tunes?

Hi BadDreams,

The answer to #1 depends on several things - what year the 7.3 is, what type of tuning he needs, etc. Generally speaking, yes, we do get better gains on the 7.3's, just to give you a rough idea. Now it's not like they're going to be DOUBLE what the other programmer is doing, it's usually on the order of about 10%-20% better in the 7.3 PSD's, just as a very rough guesstimation.

Usually the XCal 1 has to come back here for us to unlock it in order for it to be used on the next vehicle - sometimes we'll see that it can be done via ExtremeTune - this also depends on the XCal 1's firmware revision level, etc., so don't be surprised if you need to send it in. And yes, as you mentioned, the first vehicle it's used on always has to be returned back to stock before the unit can be unlocked for use on a different vehicle.

Yes, we can email tunes out, we do that every day - so we're happy to do that for you, and see if that will work - meaning if you can unlock it on your end to use it on another vehicle - and if it can't, then you can shoot it in to us & we can do that here for you & shoot it right back out.

Now with all of that being said - and I'm going to sound like a terrible salesman here when I say this - I really don't know if it's going to be worth it to you to pay us to do custom tuning for that 7.3 when it already has some pretty good tuning - if we could increase the power gains by say, 40% or more, then I'd say sure, it's worth doing for the 7.3 diesel - but given that we probably won't top those present gains by more than about 20%, only you can decide whether that would really be worthwhile for you. For example, I don't know what other modifications (if any) that 7.3 currently has, but you might be better off continuing to use your present programmer, and take the money you would have to pay us for new custom tuning and put it into another type of modification - like a good intake kit, for example, or any number of other things.

You might want to give us a call so we can go over all the details on this with you, to help sort this out as to whether we feel it's worthwhile for you to have us do custom tunes for that 7.3, or whether you'd be better off doing something else, since I don't know anything about the vehicle at this point - so please do feel free to give us a call to go over those details so you can give all of that some thought & make your decision from there - just a suggestion!
