Hola again.

Brought the truck back to stock configuration as part of the testing to see if the problem migrated. Short version . . . it did. Kinda embarrassing for the dealer rep cause it even did it in their lot just in front of the service door. It certainly got their(Ford's) attention though.

No error codes were present, but they replaced the PCM and the throttlebody and cleaned the MAF. Truck seems to respond well now to minor changes in throttle. I am going to install the performance tune shortly.

This is twice my truck has had the PCM replaced. Plus the throttlebody, plus the catalytic converter, plus the MAF.

I am at the breaking point with Ford in general. I have been burned by my previous '99 Exploder and a '97 Ranger XLT.

More as the situation warrants.

Just a couple quick comments in general.

First, when you reflash the PCM, you are clearing out all adaptive adjustments that have previously taken place, so the idle speed & quality can and will fluctuate until you get some miles on it - sometimes just a few hundred, sometimes it takes a couple thousand miles for things like idle quality & tranny shift characteristics to settle in.

Second - the 5.4 3V F-150's have far too low an idle speed in gear anyway, IMHO - many are as low as just 525 rpm in gear, and none are above 560 rpm in gear, and that is just way too low for proper power steering response and other concerns. We raise that in ALL of our Troyer Performance custom tunes, and you do not see anyone stalling with *our* tuning - and you have much better power steering assist when the truck is stationary, too - like if you need to parallel park, or are trying to maneuver a big camping trailer into a tight space, etc. That is just one of many aspects of how our custom tuning goes much more in depth than any off-the-shelf tune ever can.

For those with 1714's & 1745's, I;d say just flash it, and leave it on that same program for at least 1000 miles and see if that settles in for you - and if not, then contact Superchips inc directly at the number that is provided on your unit's documentation,a nd take it up with them for remedy.

Good luck!
I am so glad to hear that our trucks have an abnormally low idle. The other day I was backing my boat in and turning the steering wheel and my truck just about died.....At first I thought I was hearing things....Guess not.....Maybe another unrelated problem, but one day I went to start my truck and it just kept cranking, no fire....I waited a few seconds, tried again, it cranked a few times then finally fired....Has run and started perfect ever since....Again, sorry if this is off topic but a huge relief to hear....

I don't believe for one second that there was anything wrong with either of the PCM's they replaced, and replacing the first PCM didn't solve or prevent the issue of it stalling later on. No, I suspect the actual culprit always was with the throttle body to begin with.

There was a bad batch of them at one point where they were failing on some trucks - not a lot of them by any means, but enough to see a pattern. And that is really all that needed to be replaced, I'd bet. Sounds to me like that dealership was simply bending over backwards in their efforts to take care of you, and they are to be commended for that.

My money is on it just being a bad throttle body that failed in service, with it's electric motor not reacting properly to the voltage sent to it by the PCM, as in every single case we have seen this happen in, it was always just the throttle body - not the PCM.

Of course, the bottom line is that there is NO automaker whose products are perfect, and at this point, no automaker's products that are significantly better than others (well, entities like KIA & the real el-cheapo Korean makes aside I should say!) - including imports like Lexus/Toyota, BMW, Mercedes, Honda, GM, Mopar, etc - they *all*have problems. It's how they respond to them that makes the difference these days.

What really matters it that you were properly taken care of and a resolution made so the vehicle now operates properly, and that's always good news!
