with these new 5.4's the knock sensor has the ability to advance the timing if no knock is sensed. In the computer my truck was calibrated to indvidually retard or advance any cylinder on its own. Which is ideal, except the the new 5.4 knock sensor cannot sense one cylinder (either #7 or #8)when it starts to detenate . So it has to be set back to global retard or advance, where is it notices any detenation it retards all cylinders at once.

Hi RP,
Good to see you again,
Yes, basically just as John & Ryan have mentioned as I've explained it to both of them over the phone in some detail, the knock sensor is there to protect the engine against detonation (pinging). It is basically just a microphone "tuned" to hear sounds in a specific frequency range - the freq. at which detonation occurs, the freq. that is heard in the engine block when pinging happens. So when the knock sensor hears that, it's voltage output increases to signal the PCM to retard engine timing.
Now in the case of the 5.4 3V engines, they have a switch to allow the spark to be retarded globally (on all cylinders), or individually (just the cylinder(s) actually pinging) - so that only the cylinders that are actually detonating get the timing retarded, while the rest get their full normal spark advance, for best possible performance.
Well, the problem comes in where if we set it up for individual cylinder monitor mode, in the 5.4 3V engine there is a cylinder that the knock sensor cannot hear, and so if that one cylinder detonates, the knock sensor can't protect it and you get audible pinging. This is easy cured by us setting it up for global action rather than individual cylinder-specific action.
This was something wee tested back in the 1st quarter of this year, and most trucks liked it just fine - but then when we did that to some trucks that did NOT come here to us, again, most liked it but a few didn't - so we immediately changed how we did that and set them all up globally, and changed that tuning for all those customs, whether they had a problem or not. I think Ryan slipped thru the cracks, and we're thinking it was simply because he's up in Canada but we shipped his order to a US address - I won't go into all the details of why that made a difference in us tracking him down, just suffice it to say that t did - but we did find him & of course, we're taking care of that for him & have already discussed that with him.
So that's the scoop.
PS - never did see those detailing tips you were going to send, RP - just a quick reminder, and it's no big deal - I know you're probably as swamped as I am.

CRAP! I totally forgot man. I'm sorry. I'll get on that very soon. I need to give you a buzz anyway... I'll try to catch you in the office tomorrow.
Thanks for the explanation... I appreciate it man!

Hi RP!
Hey, don't you worry about it, I just had to tease you!
I know you're as busy as we are, so that is *not* a priority - if you manage to find time, great, and if not, don't you worry about it - we're permanently cool.

hey fx4renegade this has nothing to do with superchips or whatever but do you have any more pics of your truck other than those three? i have the exact same truck and looking for the exact same setup as yours. it looks awsome. i dont live by you so dont worry about haveing the same truck
. any more pics would be awsome. thanx
