Change to Towing Tune?

I'm going to be moving around 2 tons of landscaping retaining wall stones today in the bed of my truck.

Should I dump my 87 tune and go to my towing tune?

Total haul distance = around 20 miles.

Thanks guys.

I hope you aren't planning on hauling two tons at once. I beleive that as long as you are hauling within the trucks recommended weights you don't have to change into towing mode.

I would without a doubt load the towing tune. The reprogram will only take you a few minutes & I wouldn't put any heavy loads on the engine with a performance. Better safe than sorry my 2 cents.

Yep, go with the towing program. Loading the bed with that much weight is the same as towing a trailer of the same weight. Changing tunes is a snap.

I'm surprised you can find the time to do any landscaping in between the washing and multiple coats of NXT and #26!

On my Xacal by Troyer, is states that no towing with performance tunes,
I would also think that carrying a heavy load would benefit from the tow tune.

Hi RockPick,

Good to see you again!

The deal is, you can carry right up to the maximum on-board weight rating of the vehicle and still use the performance tune - so if you need to move a refrigerator, for example, you could still do that.

However, I don't know of any F-150 that you can load 2 tons (4000 lb!) into the bed of, that is grossly overloading the vehicle and I would not do that under *any* circumstances using *any* tune, as dumping 4K lb into the bed is way over any such rating for that vehicle.

Perhaps we are just misunderstanding your post, and maybe you mean that you'll be making several trips, but that the TOTAL weight of the material to be transported over those several trips will be 4K lb? (I hope?)

If you are going to put one *ounce* more weight in that bed than what it's rated for, then yes, you do need to switch to the towing tune, as it's a matter of the EGT's (Exhaust Gas Temperatures). Our towing tunes use significantly richer A/F's to keep the EGT's down, as is appropriate for a "towing" type of tune - so for carrying loads above the rating of the vehicle's **on-board** ratings, yes, we recommend switching to the towing tune.

I know it's a PITA for just 20 miles, but not knowing any more about what you're actually going to be doing, I have to say do the switch.

Good luck, RP!

The two ton number was over two trips... sorry... should've been more clear. I definitely had better sense than to toss 4,000 pounds in there and run. LOL!

I did switch to the tow tune for my piece of mind. Total weight on the haul was probably around ... oh... 1800 on the first and 1600 on the second so, not that big of a deal in the overall scheme.

The good news, the difference was noticable with the change in tunes. I felt as though I handled hills with greater ease and less downshifting (but, then again, my foot was a lot lighter -- only 55 mph on the interstate -- which, in and of itself is dangerous during this weekend... LOL!)

Thanks again for the responses and help guys... Mike, your tunes CONTINUE to impress the heck out of me. I'll be rolling back to the 87 Perf this evening... I can't seem to get enough of it. I'm scared to death to try the 93 Perf tune... I know I'm going to like it too much. LOL!

JP -- me? cross-post? never ever ever. LOL!

OK RP, glad I misunderstood & it all worked out fine for you. And yes, while our 87 octane tune helps a bunch on these trucks, the premium gas tunes take it over the top, so to speak.

Have fun,

I made the mistake of not using the tow tune when I hauled my son's parts car. 1500 lbs trailer 3000 lbs car. I noticed it when I backed it up into the driveway. Ping with a capitol P. Next time I'ill switch. And for me it is the simple turn of a ****. :o

I did, actually, do a little bit of towing...

I'm not sure Mike but, running that little toy might have been just about as much fun as standing on the gas and feeling the truck really 'move'.

Details on 'The Wall Project' can be found here ... btw, it's almost done!

Hi RP,

That little thing looks like it would be a blast to work with - I don't think I've ever seen one that small - cool!

Congrats on the wall project!
