A question for Mike T
A question for Mike T
I just ordered an xcalibrator from you this week and I look forward to applying it to my truck. The question I have is about the exhaust on an 2004 f150 supercrew with the 5.4 engine. Before I saw your site, I had a custom dual exhaust system installed on my truck. The guy installed a catback system with glass packs. The truck seems to be lost a lot on takeoff. Is there anyway to help this with the programmer or would I be better off getting a system from you. If so, which system should I go with. If you could help me out I would appreciate it. thanks

Hi b,
Welcome to F-150 Online!
What you're describing is the typical result from doing a true-dual exhaust system on any modern truck or SUV - or for that matter, *any* exhaust system that does not have proper flow engineering to speed the spent exhaust gasses back up to compensate for the velocity lost by opening up the exhaust (back pressure does not equal torque, contrary to popular myth - it's just incidental, the loss of torque when opening up the exhaust is actually due to reduced exhaust gas velocity, which kills scavenging).
I'm afraid the only way to really "fix" that it to have the exhaust re-done.
BUT.......
Before you go to that extreme, you might want to try waiting a bit to see how you feel once you get your new custom Xcalibrator installed, so you'll have an idea as to whether the torque gained from our custom tuning will be enough to satisfy you - because if so, that would allow you to keep your present exhaust. I say that because opening up the exhaust as it is right now will give you some horsepower gain at higher rpms - it's just that torque below about 3000 rpm suffers. So if you get enough torque gain from our custom tuning, then you just might be able to live with your present exhaust setup, if you like it's sound - and then you could take that same money you were going to spend on another exhaust system and instead, spend it on some other *additional* modifications - maybe like our underdrive pulleys and/or our dual 16" electric fan kit we just released for the new body style 2004 & up F-150's. Don't get me wrong, we can certainly supply you with the proper exhaust system if you like, but if this other way worked for you, then you would end up with more total peak horsepower for the same amount of money spent. Since your present exhaust has at least gained you some HP up top, if you could live with the lower-rpm torque once the custom tuning is installed, then you could add another 25-30 Hp at the wheels.............you get the idea. It's just a thought.
This is up to you, of course - if you're set on absolutely maximizing torque in the lower rpms as well as HP gains at higher rpms (& thus replacing the current exhaust), of course we can provide a proper S/S system that will provide a great aggressive sound without droning inside the cabin, without the loss of low-end torque, while gaining nice horsepower in the higher rpms ranges, too.
So it's up to you - if you'd like to wait & see how your new tuning feels, that's one approach that might work for you, and it's worth thinking about trying at least, because worst case, you can always come to us for another exhaust system that will fix the loss of torque while gaining nice power up top, too.
Feel free to give us a call if you'd like to go over any of this in more detail,
