Question for Mike on the 1715

Mike,
There's alot of talk about the 4.6 and 5.4 and not a lot about
the 5.0. Either there isn't any out there or the ones who have
them don't want anyone to know HA!!!!! I myself have the 5.0
and bought the 1715 and install it yesterday. I could feel the differance right away. I set it on the 87 octane to start with.
Do I just go in and change from one program to the next and
follow directions???? Just following directions is a lot to ask of
me. The paper work that it came with didn't say. I can see why
everyone here has only good things to say. You've just added
one more to the growing list of happy customers!! Keep up the
good work.

93 tune

if you switch to the 91 tunes make sure you wait till the low fuel light is on- refill with premium- then switch to towi or premium non tow 91 mode

Hi F96,

Actually, there are indeed a number of great 5.0 F-150 owners here - another gentleman with a 1996 5.0 like yours is "rwatson," that's his screen name here. He's got a 1996 5.0 Automatic F-150 that he has done a significant amount of mods to, a very nice truck.

So those owners are here too, don't worry.

Phil (openclasspro#11) hit the nail on the head - aside from disabling the fuel system prior to flashing the PCM and not flashing the PCM in freezing temperatures, the main thing to remember is that when you change from an 87 octane program to a premium gas program, make sure to run your current tank of 87 octane down low - preferably until the low fuel light first comes on. You'll still have a few gallons on board, so you won't run out of gas unless you have to drive a long way to get gas - then fill it up with premium gas, and *then* you can go ahead and install the premium gas tuning. When going from premium back down to 87, you don't have to run the premium down quite that low, as you don't have to worry about detonation when going the other way.

The main thing is simply making sure you don't "top off" say, 1/4 tank of existing 87 with premium gas, for example - that will dilute the incoming premium gas too much, and you might get some detonation (pinging) if you install the premium gas tuning at that point.

So just get into the habit of running the 87 down low when you want to change to the premium gas tuning - other than that, you can change those programs any time you like as per the Micro Tuner's instructions, just use the appropriate program for the appropriate type of vehicle use. Meaning, make sure to use a towing-compatible program when towing, and use the right octane level of fuel for the program you're running, etc.

One last tip - make sure ALL your vehicle maintenance is up to date, because running performance tuning on a vehicle that needs a fuel filter, ignition maintenance, etc. will not give proper results. Change the fuel filter every 15K miles in these trucks, forget the 30K mile interval Ford recommends.

Have fun !
