sct 6600 review
Bought an SCT 6600 for my 97 Expy, 5.4. Instructions were very clear and a supplemental instruction sheet from the distributor was excellent.
I had to remove the battery box to get at the harness. Scraping off the protective coating was tedious but easy. I have 4 settings:87-tow, 87-perf, 91-tow, 91-perf. I was told that there was a 38 HP difference between the 87-tow and the 91-perf before I bought it. Well, no seat of the pants difference at all. In fact the stock setting seems crisper than the other settings. There are a few settings where the truck isn't supposed to run at all but mine does and actually runs like stock on one of them. I'm not sure if the settings are even programmed in correctly now. I removed the chip and reinstalled like it like they advised but no change. I thought something may be wrong with it so I called the distributor back and he told me that there was no way he would believe my claim of no increase in power without dyno or track numbers to prove it. However the instruction sheet says to disconnect the battery again after installing the chip so you can "feel" the immediate gain in performance rather than let the computer get accustomed to the new setting over 300 miles or so. I was told by the salesperson before I bought it that there would be a very noticeable "seat of the pants" difference between 87-tow and 91-perf but yet my stock setting feels better than the custom tunes. They also claimed that since I didn't have tranny mods done to the custom tunes that would cause me not to feel the increase in power. I do have a shift kit already. When I told him I wasn't happy with it he told me to send it back and he would refund my money then he hung up on me. I immediately called back but nobody answered the phone at the business. When I did get ahold of them on another day they refused to give me back my money and stated they don't refund money on custom tunes even though the owner said he would. I understand not refunding money on a custom tune. That's standard in the industry for electrical parts but he said he would. The salesperson on the phone then said they would double check and get back with me on the refund but I haven't heard back in over a week. At that time I told the salesperson I would like to have the refund the owner told me about but it sounded like returning it to have it checked for a problem was an option also. They haven't even callback to say they would check it for a problem.
The dial is tiny and does not have a "stop" on it so it just spins round and round. This means you have to see the numbers to know what setting your on. If you accidentally go from a custom tune setting to stock or visa versa you will get a check engine light and the tranny goes into high gear. Owner of the distributorship said this was normal. If you mount it under the dash or in glovebox you can't see the numbers. The numbers are very small and hard to read. Also after I bought it I found out you can't switch from a custom setting to stock without shutting the truck off first. I was also told after having the problems that after switching from an 87 tune to a 91 tune the computer needs time to adjust over many miles. However I was told before I bought it that if I was at a stoplight and someone wanted to "race" me I could just switch to the higher setting and get an immediate change. This was wrong. Very disappointing.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience! I often wondered about claims of being able to change tunes on the fly... I had a Flip Chip in my truck, and it required you turn off the truck, then switch programs and strat the truck again. Besides, to run the 93 Performance tune, you'd have to be running 93 octane in the tank. For the life of me, I could never figure out why someone would be running the 87 program when they had a tank full of 93 octane gas! So, the concept of switch-on-the-fly kind of escapes me when it comes to custom tuning! Good luck resolving your issues!

Looks like this is just another case where a company claims all kinds of benefits with their product but when they don't meet the claims then the old "we don't refund on custom tunes" remarks comes out. Well known company too and I didn't expect this kind experience with them but they have my $350.00 and are probably laughing.

Yeah,
Who did you get it from, I am looking at purchasing this exact chip for my 98 f-150 4.6. I need to know what the deal is before I spend the money, cause I ain't got much.

Sounds like he got his chip from our well known sponsor. I have the same chip and have not had a problem with it. Sounds like there is a problem with his chip. Mine gives me a noticeable difference from the stock program. The shifts are much firmer and the truck is much more responsive. It is a whole different truck all together. I only run the 87 performance tune and like it. I have run the 93 performance for a tank of gas once and it was impressive. Did not seem a whole lot better than 87 but that was just one tank and its been awhile. I think D needs to have the chip reprogrammed. As for the money back D, you know that aint happening and as you stated electrical parts are not subject to a refund which is common knowlege. At least let them redo the chip and see if you like it. They have a good rep and I dont think they would screw you, but thats just my opinion. Yes it is advertised as a shift on the fly device, but like said above you cant change gas type on the fly so what ever is in your tank is all you can run until refueling. Sorry you are not satisfied.
i got my 6600 from mike and my truck hauls *** i have ran 87 in mine and it fill sometimes like it the same hp as the 91. but then when i drive it for awile i can till the difference. just put 91 or 93 in it for a couple tanks then take the chip out then you will want to put it back in. i can notice the difference between 91 and 93

Thats what it sounded like to me but I could be wrong. I was just guessing. Thats why I suggested he send it back and have it redone cause they tend to take care of you. I dont know for sure where he got it from. So Okay..........Where did he get the chip???????
If they don't call me back I can't get it repaired. Owner/ tuner told me himself he would give me my money back then when I ask for it they wont do it. I'm intentionally not giving the name but I'm sure you all would recognize it.
