Passing Gear?
I have the 1714 with the 87 octane tune. When I step on the accelerator to pass someone, the transmission sometimes drops down to ,what feels like 1st gear, for a second or two and then shifts back up one gear. It does this very harshly. Will this damage the transmission and is there any way to soften the harsh effect?

That's what it's designed to do. Unless your rpm are going beyond around 5500rpm or so, I would not worry about it.
You're likely dropping down to second gear, which will take you to up to around 70mph or so (varies based on your gearing).
High rpm is where the horsepower is, and your power demands - as indicated by a heavy throttle - cause the ECU to deliver max power, precisely as it was designed to do.
Highway passing is all about horsepower
