91 Octane Tune?
91 Octane Tune?
Will it be OK to tow a 3500 Lb. boat about once a month with the 1714 Tuner set on the 91 Octane tune? I have heard that the 91 Octane Tow Safe tune is not real impressive and I don't really want to switch back and forth everytime I tow the boat. I know it asks if you will be towing anything over 4000 lbs. when you load the performance tune and I was just wondering what the safe limit is?

Hi John,
There's a reason why it says 4000 lbs - that's the limit.
But I'm glad you asked, as I do take that a bit further, so I'll give you some specific guidelines that we use, that will get to what you & other 2004 F-150 owners using the 1714 will like knowing...............
First - we recommend using the appropriate program for how the vehicle is being operated - when towing, use the towing tune, that's what it's designed for. Towing tunes use richer A/F ratios and an appropriate timing curve to protect the engine, keep the EGT's in line, etc., along with some other minor differences.
Superchips says you can do light towing using the 1714 (NOT THE 1715!!!) on the hi-performance tune, up to 4000 lb. - personally, I won't tow on the hi-performance tune at all with our vehicle configuration & conditions our 2004 operates under. I would consider it with an EGT gauge to keep an eye on those exhaust gas temperatures, and we'll soon be installing an EGT on that truck. Our 2004 weighs 6200 lb empty, being a heavy 4x4 SuperCrew Lariat, and we're in what passes for mountains in our state (1500-3500 ft. elevations) - so I don't feel it's appropriate to tow using the 1714's hi-performance tune for our operating conditions.
To give you a guideline on this, I'd say if you need to tow up to 4000 lbs. for a short distance (say, 150 miles or so) on relatively flat terrain with your 2004 F-150, you can generally get away with that with the 1714's performance tune - but if you come across grades of any significant length or angle, or if you're going to be towing for hundreds of miles, etc., then I recommend you use the towing program. With those informal guidelines, you can easily determine whether you should use the towing tune or if your conditions will permit the performance tune in the 1714.
Last - for others reading this, this DOES NOT APPLY TO ANY OTHER MICRO TUNER, chip, etc. - in this post we're talking *strictly* about the 1714 Micro Tuner for the 2004 F-150's.
Good luck!
