Once it has stored your factory settings,It it stays there until you go back to stock.Once you have saved the stock settings,You just plug in and it tells you that the vin is lock meaning that the memory is saved. And the you just tune to what every you want,Just follow the questions that it gives you.Hope this helps...
Hi Skinhead,
Just echoing Tonymech's kind response, which was right on the money...............................
Of course, we're talking about using the Micro Tuner, the hand-held programmer - and with those units (1714 for the 2004's or the 1715 for 1996-2003's), you can easily go in and just change say, a tire size, or a gear ratio, or a shift point, etc., without having to do anything else. And no, you won't lose your stock factory tune, the Micro Tuner stores that.
The main thing to remember is that if you take the vehicle in for service at a Ford dealership service department, make sure to FIRST return the vehicle back to the stock tuning - this is done just in case they flash your vehicle's PCM with an updated factory revision - if they did that with the performance tuning still in place, they could do their job OK, but you'd lose everything in the Micro Tuner - it would no longer function, as it would think that more than one vehicle at a time was trying to use it, and you'd have to pay a fee to have the Micro Tuner unlocked, so it would be usable once again. So just make sure that if you go into a dealership for service (and I don't mean for a simple oil change or tire rotation), whether it's under warranty or not doesn't matter - return to your stock tuning. Then re-tune it once you get the vehicle back. That will insure that even if they do flash the PCM with a new update, the Micro Tuner won't lock up on you from it's "copy protection" mechanism. In other words, just like Tony said in his response - follow it's instructions in it's manual and you'll be in good shape!
Have fun,
