Cool

Hi GoDogGo

Because of the Bauman shift kit your shifts are still hard but with the Super Chip installed are the shifts harder or the same?.

Thanks.

Larry.

Hi GoDogGo,

Thanks for your post!

This is something that occurs with some regularity. People have commented here from time to time about a situation like you describe, where you've been running the Superchip for a period of time and then need to remove it for some reason, and you suddenly notice just how much it's been doing for your performance all along.

Glad you didn't have to be without it for long, & have fun!

Hi Speeder,

Just to give you a quick answer, the Superchip makes it's own improvements to the automatic transmission's shift characteristics, and that will be there whether you have a shift kit installed or not.

The shift kit is not going to negate in any way what the Superchip does, if that might have been what you were thinking.

With the Superchip installed, the shifts are going to be harder than they will be with just the shift kit GoDogGo has, as the Superchip makes it's own increases in line pressure via changes to the powertrain program, so that will be in addition to what the mechanical modification of the shift kit does.

I hope that answers your basic question, and I'm sure GoDogGo will respond with his own comments..........

speeder,
Mike T. as usual has basically answered your question right on the money. Shift kit=mechanical control, chip=computer control via line pressure changes. The chip adds to whatever state you transmission set-up is. In my case, my transmission is set-up on a Stage 4 setting. Insofar as the chip is concerned, my "stock" setting is a Stage 4 setting and the line pressure changes that the chip makes are to the Stage 4 setting. Without the chip, the Stage 4 setting is a big improvement above stock. However, in my opinion, I don't think that the shifts with a Stage 4 setting but without the chip are hard, but are firm. IMHO, a Stage 3 setting would be the perfect stock set-up from the factory.

I had the chip before the Baumann kit. When I installed the kit to the Stage 4 setting, I thought I had gone too far as the 1-2 shifts, in tandem with the chip, were harsh for the first day or so. The other shift points are fine. It has since loosened up and the 1-2 shift is very firm but not harsh. At WOT, in tandem with the chip, the 1-2 shift is tire chirping and neck snapping. I am now glad I started with a stage 4 setting since the shifts are very nice should I ever have to remove the chip for some reason (over my dead body). I can always reflash the chip should it be needed (which I intend to do later for other performance enhancement reasons). That is one of the beauties of the chip - it can always be reflashed to modify your "stock" condition.

Hope this helps

Thumbs up Of course it really works...

Well guys,
I have been running the superchip for so long that I have taken it for granted. Recently, I removed it a few days before I went to my dealer for some servicing (new radiator). I probably didn't need to take out the chip since I was only getting a radiator, but removed it anyway just to be safe. After chip removal and driving around...holy crap!!...where did my torque go!!...and no more tire spin???

Got truck back, new radiator, and put I put the chip back in first thing. Much better now. Got my torque and tire spin back...lol!!!

For my truck, the chip really makes a big difference and I will not take it for granted any longer.

Oh,
And chip removal = loss of torque was not a percieved thing because of the change in transmission shifting characteristics that the superchip offers, as some would contend. I am running a Baumann shift kit on Stage 4 setting. So even without the chip, my shifts are nice and firm.

Hi GoDogGo,

Thanks for giving those details in your post, that gives a far more complete picture & explanation.

That should give him some excellent info to go on!

Hey GoDogGo,

Just curious, when you installed the Bauman kit, did you also do the mod to the Overdrive band as well?

I ask just because of what Neal has posted about his experience with the Bauman kit, he installed his on Level 5 but didn't do the Overdrive band mod as described in the Bauman kit, which you probably saw. He was kind enough to mention that to everyone after his Overdrive band went, so I was just curious if you happened to do that part of the shift kit too.............

Hi Mike,
Yes, I saw Neal's post about suggesting to do the overdrive modification. Thanks for reminding me as I really need to do that mod. I will probably get to it the next time I change the engine oil in the next couple of weeks or so. I have been purposely procrastinating the mod since it is so messy getting to the valve body!! Luckily, I installed a B&M deep pan (nice) with a drain plug, so that should help keep the transmission fluid spillage down to a minimum...lol!.

Hi GoDogGo,

Thanks for your response, I was just curious if you had done it. Given Neal's experience and what we already know about these automatics, I think it's a wise idea. In fact, a friend of mine is trying to get a fellow at Bauman to do the race build on my 4R70W in the Mark 8, in preparation for the supercharger that is *eventually* going on. I don't know if this fellow will be willing to do it, he has said he doesn't want to do any more of them with everything else he's got going on, so it may end up going to Art Carr instead, we'll just have to see what develops.

Good luck!
