Mike T./ Superchips question
I have a friend with an F250(unsure of the year)with a 5.4, automatic. He claims he has a Diablo Superchip. Is this one of your products? If not stop here. If so, he claims performance gains with regular unleaded, minimal mileage improvement and a much improved shift pattern. He also claims that the truck no longer "labor knocks" around town. Here is the question. He is experiencing a shift problem wherein the truck shifts to 2nd around 5200-5400 then immediately goes back to 1st gear and shifts back to 2nd at 6000. The only way it will shift properly is to let off on the 1-2 shift. WHO LETS OFF? Can you make any sense of this for me?
Thanks,
ExpyGator

Hi ExpyGator,
No, the Diablo has nothing to do with the Superchip, and what your friend is experiencing is most likely a powertain programming problem.
We've seen that kind of thing happen if the changes made to the powertrain's program for gear ratio changes aren't done correctly, for example, or if there is a mechanical problem elsewhere. He can determine that very easily, if this problem only happens with that Diablo chip installed, and does not happen when it's removed, then it's obviously a problem in that powertrain program.
To answer your original question, the only way to get Superchip tuning is to own a Superchip, end of story.
We had a customer who experienced that same type of symptom, and it was easy to fix. In that case it was due to a gear ratio change where the original gear ratio programming in the computer was different from what was stated to us by the customer. Once we knew that, then it was very easy to fix, and was done immediately.
Unless there is something funky like that going on that your friend has perhaps not told that chipmaker about, or perhaps a change that was made after he got the chip maybe, it's just a problem in that powertrain program, and he needs to get them to fix that for him.
Diablo has generally not been able to do changes to correct speedometer calibrations for tire size or gear ratio changes in these late-model Fords, we're one of very few companies that can do that correctly on many 1999 & 2000 model-year Ford vehicles.
If he wants the best powertrain programming, he needs to be in the Superchip, however, I would advise since he already owns that other chip, to try and make them correct it, and only if they can't, then send it back. Hopefully they should be able to correct that for him.
If not, he can always give us a call.
Best of luck to your friend,
