Do I already have a Superchip???
Just bought my used '97 with the 4.6. It has very impressive power and torque. How do I know if it already has the computer chip mod? I plan on installing one, but want to make sure it does not already have it before I shell out the $$$ for a new one.
Thanx!!

look at your computer and if you have a superchip you can see it on the outside and it should say superchip on it. If not you will only see a rubber plug where the chip hooks into your computer.

Hey cjmf150! Welcome to f150online!
The quickest way too tell if you have one installed already is to check the back of the computer. Go to the pass. side of the truck and pull up on the front of the door sill moulding. It should pop up easily enough. It feels like your going to break it,but it's okay. next, pull the weather strip off of the lip that it's pressed onto the door jam flange. It comes off very easily also. I usually pull it far enough to wedge it into the door jam(out of the way) Then all there is left to do is pull the kick panel off. grab the back edge, and the edge by the door jam,and this also will pop right off in your hands.
Get a flashlight and shine it up into the kick panel area, and you should see a silver aluminum box(about 1 1/2" x 7"..)
If there is something plugged into the back of the comp.,facing you, then you have some sort of chip installed already.
Superchips are blue metallic colored,,and some others may be black,or gold. Hope you find one,it'll save you some money

Oh,almost forgot! Check out the product reviews on the left side of the page. Click on the "Hypertech Power Module" link and it shows you what the comp looks like, and where the chip will be if you have one,,,Good luck!!!

Hi cjmf150,
Glad to hear your F-150 is running well!
You can determine if a Superchip is installed by simply taking a look at your vehicle's powertrain computer, which is mounted so that most of it is inside the the passenger's side, easy to see, to the right of the dash assembly, and just above the passenger's kick panel. (You do not need to remove that kick panel on 1997 & newer F-150's) It looks like a galvanized aluminum box, rectangular in shape, and will be held against it's mounting bracket by a black pressure clip. That is the rear of the computer, where that black clip is attached, and if a Superchip is installed, you will see a blue module saying "Superchips" on it right there.
If you have any questions about how to find the computer, or the easiest way to access it, just give us a quick call at our number below and we'll be happy to walk you thru that, it's very easy and you don't have to actually remove any panels.
You're right, it's a good idea to check!
Congratulations on getting your F-150, we hope you enjoy it! With all the information available at this web site, I'm sure you'll find many useful things to help you enjoy your F-150 even more.
