I don't know about you guys, but I get depressed driving my truck without the chip in. I took it out to bring the truck in for service. It was out for a total of two days. I only drove the truck to and from the dealership the two days (about nine miles each way). I couldn't wait to get that chip back in!
It may be a few more dollars to run with the higher octane. If I 'had' to run without the chip now it would cost me more. I'd have to visit a shrink!
I thought my gas milage was poor. Im getting sixteen mpg with the 4.6 and a five speed manual. That is even with the Superchip syndrome. Whats up with this twelve and thirteen mpg?

Hi Guys,
Gas mileage will of course depend not only on how the vehicle is driven, but also the actual energy content of the fuel being burned, And there can be significant differences in energy content of various fuels in different locations. Then you also have to figure in the vast differences in weight in all of the available F-150 configurations, there is well over 3000 lbs. of potential weight difference.
When you add all that up, you can see why some guys with 5.4 automatics can get 20 mpg on the highway, and some 4.2 V-6 manual-tranny vehicles might be lucky to get 15 mpg on a lesser fuel. Yes, manuals take less power to turn them over compared to automatics, but how you drive and the energy content of the fuel being burned are the two most controllable aspects that affect mileage.
One F-150 might get 18 mpg, and another *identical* F-150 only get 15 mpg in the same driving conditions, on a different fuel. Even when using the very best fuels, there will still be variances in energy content from one geographical location to the next, and from one refinery run to the next, so mileage is basically a bit of a moving target, for lack of a better term. The best you can do is to track your mileage every fill up, and determine which fuel in your area gives the best mileage, and what driving, etc. contributes to improving mileage, etc. In other words, all the basics that most of us already know or have discussed here. When comparing mileage, not all 5.4's are going to get the same mileage, just like not all 4.6's or V-6's will get the same mileage.
Check alignment, tire pressure, age of spark plugs & plug wires (where applicable without C.O.P.), fuel filter, & changing the O2 sensors every 30K miles are things you can do to keep these vehicles in their sharpest state of tune & get the best mileage.
Just some basic FYI stuff......................

Some have reported better MPG with the Superchip. That being correct the cost figures would have to be adjusted and maybe the higher gas would not cost sso much per mile. Oh, I do have a Superchip and plan to keep using it.

Hi Lean & Cut,
You're right on about that, Chicago seems to traditionally have the worst gas prices, and ever since a couple years ago, it seems they are always talking about "investigations" into price gouging, but nothing ever seems to actually change. Last summer Chicago's gas prices were among the highest in the country, and they'll probably be this year again as well.
I love Chicago, and could probably tolerate the gas prices, but their winters are really brutal!
