Can I do it w/ these mods?
I have a 99 F150 4x4 SC w/ the 5.4 and 3.73LS axle. Stock numbers for my truck include a 0-60 time of 8.8 and a 1/4 mile time of 16.7. I would like to take my 0-60 time to sub 8.0 seconds and my 1/4 mile time to sub 16.0 seconds. I am looking at a K&N FIPK GenerationII, Superchips flip chip, and a Gibson Swept Side exhaust. With all of these mods, can I make my truck as quick as I want it? If not, what else might I try?

Maybe. I did 8.22 in my Expy with those same mods on a day with not so perfect weather. Oh, and I've got the 3:55 LS so you've got an advantage too.

Hi rabbit03,
That should be "do-able" given those mods. With the Flip Chip, you would of course need to run it on the premium gas side to get those kinds of numbers.
The Flip Chip on it's premium gas side normally reduces the 0-60 and 1/4 mile times by anywhere from 3-5 tenths of a second on average, with some people getting more; Neal the HP Freak knocked off .61 from his 1/4 mile times in his 1999 5.4 F-150 with just the Superchip, in a direct back-to-back proper comparison, and other have reported as much as 7-8 tenths, up to a full second reduction in those times. However, those numbers are above average, which runs about 3-5 tenths reduction from the Superchip.
Using a good airbox elimination kit like either the K&N or the Airaid brand or the newer AirForce One will get you a solid 14 hp gain on those 5.4 motors, so that should get you another tenth or two off of those times.
And the exhaust you've selected, the Gibson Swept-Side, normally adds about 12-14 more horsepower on the 5.4 motor, for another tenth, perhaps a tenth and a half to two tenths off those times.
From the many reports posted here by various owners over the years, those mods are great choices (they're the top 3 best bang-for-the-buck mods) and should get you the desired performance times you mentioned. I don't think you should have a problem knocking 7-8 tenths off your 0-60 and 1/4 mile times with the combination of those 3 mods.
Now of course you probably already know that as the Summer comes on and temperatures go up, your vehicle will make less power and slow down a bit, that happens every Summer of course. So when you're doing your comparisons, make sure to take the weather into consideration, as that can have as much as 5-8 tenths of a second impact, meaning the vehicle slowing down that much in the heat of Summer compared to the quickest times it will run say, in Spring & Fall, to say nothing of Winter.
Good luck!

Mike,
I have a stock 01 SCrew 4x4 Lariat with the 5.4 engine and was wondering something. What would you suggest installing first; superchip, dual exhaust or air intake? Also, other than the superchip, what brand and specific one would you recommend? How hard is it to install the superchip? I am not at all mechanically inclined.
Thanks, Jeff

Hi Neal,
Ah, thanks for correcting me!
Far be it from us to cheat you or us out of .02, especially in your quest for sub-14.0 times normally aspirated!
Thanks for reminding me Neal, I always say .61 when talking about your results for some reason, don't ask me why I have .61 burned into my brain. I'll have to try to remember .63 instead, wish me luck!

Hi Jeff,
Well, you can actually do those 3 mods in any order you like, so you can do whatever! Most people are concerned with getting the best bang-for-the-buck in each modofication they do, and so consequently many will do the Superchip first. You can do them in any order that makes you happiest!
So for best bang-for-the-buck, you'd do the Superchip first. By the way, just in case you might not be aware, "Superchip" is not a generic term, it's actually the brand name of the product line of performance chips that we market, simply because it's hands down the best. There are 2 basic "types" of Superchip available, there is the single-program Superchip that requires the use of premium gas, and then there is our 2-program Superchip Flip Chip that we can set up with one program for 87 octane, and the other for 92 octane. Keep in mind that the power gain on 87 octane will be small, 3-5 horsepower perhaps, the real power gain will come only in the premium gas program of course. However, the vehicle will still able to accelerate a bit better on the 87 octane side of the Flip Chip thanks to the small gain and the removal of transitional retards & delays. Then the real power gain comes on the premium gas side of the Flip Chip of course, which is going to add about 10%-12% more power.
Most people here are using the single-program Superchip, but the Flip Chip is becoming ever more popular with those concerned about gas prices, etc.
The installation of easy enough that over 98% of our customers do it themselves, and it usually takes a first-timer anywhere from 30-60 minutes to do. SOme people take longer and just work slower, but it's about a 30-60 minute job for a first-timer. The documentation that we write is designed to take a first-time installer thru this with no surprises.
To place your order, you can either give us a call at our number listed below, or you can use our online ordering system here, and there is a link that will take you directly to that system just below, in our siugnature line.
What you might want to do is to just give us a call, and go over all the various details, options, etc. so you have a good idea about all that and can give it some thought if you like.
Best of luck with your new truck!
