Post reprogram chip for '97 4.10 conversion?

Does anyone know if I have to have the Superchip reprogrammed after changing the ring and pinion gears from 3.55 to 4.10? The truck is an F-150 4WD.

Thanks, fish

You can just change the driven gear on the VSS on a '97 or '98. For a '99 or up you will have to get your chip reprogrammed. There are lots of posts about this on the Other Drivetrain forum.

Hi gofish,

Ian's response is right, the real issue here is restoring speedometer accuracy, as doing that will automatically bring shift points back into line in automatic transmission-equipped vehicles, which means we do not need to adjust anything inside the Superchip's program.

This can be done by installing the proper reduction gear in the tailshift of your transmission, which has always been the "traditional" method of calibrating speedometers for many years, though it is a thing of the past in new vehicles, starting with the 1999 model year for these F-150's specifically. Up thru and including the 1998 model year, the F-150 still uses a standard reduction gear, making this a very easy job for you, since you're is a 1997 model!

These reduction gears are available for order at your local Ford dealer's parts counter, for under $20.
