Back To Square One
Alright here goes again. I was unable to get my speedometer and odometer recalibrated at the Ford shop. This guy said he did it on a mustang through the computer but for some reason it would not work on my truck. The guy also said that my truck does not have a gear that can be changed out. So I am back to where I started. I wanted to put the question back on. Is the TruSpeed calibrator any good? Does it work? Should I buy it?

There is definitely a VSS gear on your 98. If you have no clue where to look, consult the new Chiltons manual. It will tell you how to replace it as well.

Hi MyFordTruck98,
1.) The Ford dealership can only reflash your computer to a different *factory* program, for different options that were offered by the factory on that same vehicle. So they can upload a different factory program for things like a gear ratio that was offered by the factory on that same vehicle, or a tire size that was offered by the factory on that same vehicle, and that's it.
2.) Your vehicle *DOES* in fact have a standard reduction gear in the tailshaft of your transmission, and it's easy to replace for about $17 at any Ford parts counter, as long as you know how many teeth you need on the gear. As another poster mentioned, it sounds like you were dealing with someone who doesn't have a clue what they're talking about, which is a shame to hear about from a Ford dealership.
The deal is, 1998 was the last model year of F-150 that used a standard reduction gear like speedometers have always used. Starting in the *1999* model year for these vehicles, there is no more reduction gear, so it has to be done in the program, which we can do starting with the 1999 model year.
So I'd suggest the same thing, get a good service manual, and learn to do it yourself, it's not a tough job. Or, take it to a speedo calibration shop.
Good luck!
