Hi crazedf1,
Hands down, it's the Superchip, which is why we market only that brand, as their National Distributor. The others like Hypertech, Jet, etc. only make one "generic" program for all 2000 V-6 automatics, for example, or only 1 program for all 1998 4.6 manuals for another example, and they also only add power at WOT (wide-open throttle), as that is the only place that engine tuning is modified in most chips.
The Superchip is much different, it's made to precisely match the exact software revision in your vehicle's computer (the "computer code", as we call it), and it also works adding power *all* the time, at any throttle position. So with the Superchip you get a program that was made specifically for *your* vehicle, and that works all the time, adding power at any throttle position above idle.
The reason other chipmakers don't modify the engine's tuning anywhere other than at full-throttle is simply because it's a lot cheaper to make a product that only works at full-throttle, due to the structure of the emissions laws. There have never been, and still aren't, any emissions standards that have to be met during full-throttle operation, so if that is the only thing you change with regards to the engine's tuning, then you drastically reduce the R&D costs, but you also get a poor program that only adds power at WOT (wide-open throttle).
Superchips is the only aftermarket powertrain programming firm that has been hired directly by the automakers themselves, and this gives them more experience & resources to be able to develop thoroughly optimized powertrain programs compared to any other similar type of company.
If you'd like to go over any of this in more detail, please feel free to give us a call, our number is just below.
With regards to the costs, the Webmaster here prefers to keep that kind of content off the message boards, so we ask that you contact us privately off the message boards for that information. Our contact info is below, and you can just shoot us a quick email. You can also click on the link just below to our online ordering system, and find it out that way, too, which is even easier.
Also, just one quick comment I wanted to make to you, based on what you wrote in your signature line about going for headers only when they're cheaper. That can be a bad mistake to make, meaning shopping for headers based on price, as you get what you pay for at best, and headers is one area where you don't ever want to scrimp. It makes all the difference in the world in the fit, finish, ease of installation, how long they last & the performance results you get from your headers. Headers are subject to a tremendous amount of heat, and you want a high-quality header with thick flanges, thick tubes, & a good ceramic coating like the Jet-Hot process. So figure you are really looking at a price of about $400-$450 for a properly coated set of headers for that truck.
Right now you don't have any choice in headers as far as brands, as only one company makes headers for the 4.2 V-6 F-150, and that is JBA. But as time goes by and more manufacturers start making headers for that 4.2 V-6, you'll still want to stay away from the cheap ones or "bargain brands", headers are just one area that you never want to scrimp on, even if you end up having to wait longer to get them, it pays to do it *right*.
Best of luck whatever you decide,

Hey there crazedf1 I just thought I'd trow in my two cents.
Before I even knew about F150-Online I had checked out the Hypretech and Jet out here on the web. The Hypertech looked all cool with neat lights and stuff. The Jet, well... So I thought they sounded alright, but I wasn't thoroughly convinced. I kept searching for more.
Fortunately I stumbled apon F150-Online, not only a very informative but loads of fun. I checked out the message boards, learned what the others were recomending. Then there is Mike, need I say more. I was convinced. I got a Superchip for my '98 F150 STX, with the 4.6.
So its been a few weeks, I really like the feel of this truck with the Superchip. I think if some one 'knows' their truck, they will feel a big difference with the Superchip.
Give it a try, you won't be dissapionted!
