Post Mike T.: I had a shift kit installed in my truck; do

I just had my transmission rebuilt (something made a bushing go out and it cracked the case and tore a bunch of stuff up) and my mechanic told me he installed a different shift kit in it that, although creates a firmer shift, would make the truck downshift from 4th, to 3rd, to 2nd instead of just shifting from 4th to 2nd (I imagine it works the same in all gears). When I got the truck back, it ran fine but the next day the check engine light came on. I removed the the Superchip and the light went away. Do I need to get my chip reprogrammed because of the shift kit? Thanx for your help.

HI Elmo,

Depending on just what this mechanic did to the transmission, we might have to make some changes, as sometimes some aspects of certain types of shift kits can modify line pressure and other thigns to teh point that transmission sensors will throw error codes as a result. The key here is that there weren't any check engine lights before this shift kit modification was done, with just the Superchip on there, this didn't start until after they did that work.

However, the first thing that needs to be done when you get a check engine light is to scan the computer for error codes, and see just what the computer is telling us, what the specific error code means. Do that first, scan the computer for that error code, to see just what it's reporting before doing anything else, and shoot us an email to let us know what error code you find, ok? Then we can check that out and se what needs to be done from there, is what I would suggest elmo.

And of course, always feel free to give us a call if you want to go over this in more detail, etc.
