Talking Just a little 150hp NOS Shot

I read almost all the threads on this site regarding NOS (most of it is just hearsay). It seems the most common problem is not having your fuel to air mixture set correctly while boosting. (Correct me please). Ok, so if I was to only boost at a WOT condition I should be able to have my computer tuned for this, correct? (Mike T Insert Answer Here) Eliminating all cause for concerns as far as “PINGING” hence damaging you pistons. By the way isn’t NOS an inert gas (non flammable), you can breathe it. (HA HA HA). I have the problem of no blowers available for my engine, yet. So I might find myself in need of 500 plus Hp at some desperate moment. NOT ALL THE TIME! I find my hp quite adequate for hauling, towing and romping around. I barley have enough room to slow down my beast these days.

I hear, “A Shot Once In A While Is Good For You”…

Cool

HI!... LASERNAV : You can ONLY run N.O.S at wide open throttle. If you try at part throttle, I hope you have a baseball glove to catch all your parts!LOL! It's not so much the detonation you have to worry about, but the fuel delivery. With a 150H.P shot, you need a lot of fuel to mix with the nitous. If your fuel pump or fuel rail for that matter can't handle that much fuel delivery then your going to melt a piston top and the possible damage your aluminum cylinder heads. Running the proper amount of fuel with the amount of nitrous you are running is VERY VERY critical. Just as critical as much timing you are running with the particular N.O.S kit you are running. A superchip can fix the timing problem for you but if you are still running the stock injectors than you are going to run into fuel "STARVATION" problem. Trust me I have been playing with nitrous for a long time. I run a 250 shot on my PRO-STREET RANGER. Read lower SIG. I also plan on running a 150H.P shot on my 5.4 crate engine that I'm building for my F-150. Hope this helps you out.

Thanks, Neal but if I did all the things you suggest. Injectors and such, What would you suggest for a kit (brand).. I notice there are quite a few out there. Also would a wet system compensate for the NOS? Since it basiclly adds the additional fuel needed while boosting?
Thanks for you great wisdom. Neal the Hp god.

HI!... LASERNAV : A "WET" nitrous system gets it's fuel from your existing fuel system. So if you don't had a high volume pump to replace your stock one or add a secondary pump for you N.O.S system, you have to make sure your stock fuel system can handle the demands of the N.O.S kit and your engine at the same time. A 150 shot will most definately be over the capabilities of the stock fuel system. As for N.O.S kits I would suggest you look in a SUMMIT RACING catologe and see all the kits that are available. Your best bet would be to contact NOS directly and tell them your application for what you want to do. Then they can suggest a kit from there or possibly build you a custom kit. Hope this helps you out.

Hi LaserNAV,

I would agree with Neal in that it's a good idea to contact the nitrous kit manufacturer directly, to see what type of system they would recommend.

Nitrous is used only on WOT, and unless you have a well-configured wet nitrous system, that augments fuel delivery as the nitrous is delivered, which is a bit pricey, you will need to use a 2-program Flip Chip, as you'll need one program for use with nitrous only, and then another program for the rest of the time, when you're not spraying the NO2. And in all candor, we don't ever recommend trying to use a single-program setup when running nitrous on a computer-controlled vehicle, we always recommend using the 2-program Flip Chip.

And, there just might be a blower you can use, try the Vortech kit for the 4.6 DOHC Mustang Cobra. Vortech has a few installers who have adapted that kit for use in the Lincoln Mark 8, and that kit should be able to be adapted to your 5.4 DOHC Navigator as well with a little homework.

Good luck!
