Post Torque loss???

I ordered the Gibson Sweptside but it would not fit without major modifications. I took it to a local dealer and he was going to have to do alot of cutting and bending so I put on Flowmaster 40 duel chamber. It looks and sounds very good but I think I loss some low end torque just by the feel. Any thoughts???

Hi: Micky88, I've installed Gibson sweptback, along with Pacesetter coated headers, I find that I lost low-end touqe after putting on cat-back! Maybe with Chip I will get it back! MJD5.4

The exhaust is the last mod I made, but I am so disappionted about the loss of feel. I think this will help out in a drag race though. It seems to go with ease from 45 or 50. Will this increase or decrease my 1/4 mile time. Flowmaster says 14-17hp increase

Cool

My exhaust mod caused no gain or loss on low end, and really helped from mid range up. I would replace this muffler sound 10 times over, it's great.

Hey Mikey 88
I know you lost some torque and that really sucks, you should have put a flowmaster big block 70 series on your truck, the other one you put on, just lost you lots of torque. I have played with different exhaust systems on a lot of cars and trucks, and i found when you feel that you lost torque the muffler is no good for that car or truck, unless you are planing on doing some major engine work, i.e. s/c ,porting, cam, etc.
What ever it take's to get that torque back.
You also might notice when you are on the hyw or fast lane and you kick the gas down you have lost some torque or passing power.
What im trying to say is , maybe you would be better off getting the 70 series from flowmaster and keeping the stock pipe in place, don't go bigger in pipe size, any how just my 2 cent's.

Hi Mike, the Ultra-flows come in SS and a fully welded aluminized steel also. The latter cuts the price way down. Total cat- back price $242 with 3" mandrel tail section. The sound is fabulous even with the cats. Have a HAPPY AND SAFE NEW YEAR !!

Mikey 88, before i put a muffler on my truck i looked around to see what was the best for it, not a muffler that was over kill, any how i called flowmaster and they told me that the 70 series muffler was best for my truck, and not to put on any other muffler they carry, as it would loose torque on this truck, they also told me to leave the stock pipeing, as there would be no change for the good, and makeing it bigger would again result in the loss of torque, i am very happy with this muffler, it is so close looking to the factory one, and it is very quite with just a little light rumble, sweet.

Hi Max,

Thanks very much for letting us all know that those Ultra-Flow's are available in aluminized version too, I wasn't aware of that, they were always just in SS before under the Walker name, and hence pretty expensive. That price will help a lot more people get into those great mufflers, that's excellent news.

I totally agree with 4 Wheeler (same set up, 70 series only, stock pipes), actually could feel small power increase thru all rpms, no increase in gas mileage. I have over done the exhaust on other vehicles, big mistake, especially if you do any towing.

Hi Max,

Those Dynomax "Ultra-Flo" mufflers are very nice, also pretty expensive, as they are stainless steel, if memory serves. Walker of course designed and originally marketed them, and then Dynomax bought out Walker. I think they're great mufflers, myself.

Hi Mikey,

Torque loss at low rpm on part-throttle, coupled with a nice power gain at full-throttle, is typical when you open up the flow *too* much. What happens is the actual velocity of the exhaust gases traveling through the system slows down, and you lose the scavenging effect that helps to pull the spent exhaust gases out of the cylinder head, and thus you lose low-end torque, while still getting a nice power gain when your foot is to the floor, especially at higher rpms.

What you might want to do is to try another Flowmaster series muffler as was suggested by another poster in this thread. Also, call Flowmaster directly and talk to them about this, and see what they recommend, talking to the manufacturer in this case would be a very good idea.

Let us know what they tell you & good luck!

Hey Vacherie boys The headers I got are decent, drivers side was a breeze to put on, pass side had to take off starter to get one bolt on bottom of header next to bellhousing on and tighten. Drove truck for three weeks before I put on Gibson sweptback. Truck was able to spin tires easly before catback. After catback I have to floor truck to spin tires!By the way where do you race truck at? MJD5.4
