whats the best chip ?
Ok, what is the best performance chip out there? Has anyone tried more than one type on the same truck. I have a jet on my 99 4x4 4.6, it seemed to help a little, but only at w.o.t. Looking for some feed back on this.
thanks Paul.
thanks Paul.
Hi Paul,
Welcome to F-150 Online!
Jet & Hypertech only tune at wide-open throttle, and they're also made "generically", meaning only one program for all similar vehicles, whereas the Superchip is programmed for each specific vehicle's exact software revision, and adds power *all* the time, at any throttle position other than idle, of course.
The reason there is this difference, and why other chipmakers only tune at wide-open throttle is to save them a lot of money, is that there are no emissions standards that have to be met during full-throttle operation, none at all, so if you only tune there, then you don't have to independantly certify for emissions compliance like we do. Unfortunately, the end result of programming generically and only on full-throttle are small power gains and a much less effective program for performance.
You'll feel a noticeable difference between what that Jet chip does for your vehicle versus what the Superchip will do for it, which is why the Superchip is so popular.
The Superchip will add a maximum gain of 26 horsepower and 40 lbs./ft. of torque to your 4.6 F-150. It will also take care of the premature torque converter lockup in second gear when acclerating hard, and remove the transitional spark retards used during and just after upshifts, removes the downshift delays as well, and overall, is simply more thorough in it's programming changes than the others.
There are plenty of people here using the Superchip who can tell you what they feel about how it works for them, and if you'd like to go over any specific details, please feel free to give us a shout, we're always happy to help, and our contact info us just below in our signature line.
Best of luck whatever you decide, and we hope you'll hang out with us here on F-150 Online when you have spare time.

Thanks Mike for the fast reply, it sounds like the super chip covers alot of the power band, that is what im looking for, just one question, what octain is used with the super chip.
Thanks Paul
Thanks Paul
Hi Paul,
Good question, and that is the key, you must use premium gasoline with the Superchip, or any perfomance chip. It is the re-tuning of the engine specifically for the characteristics of premium gasoline that provides much of the additional power gain, there is no way to increase actual engine horsepower output via powertrain programming without using higher octane gasoline.
One of the by-products of this is potentially a little bit better gas mileage all else being equal, but this will depend on how the vehicle is driven, and the relative energy content of the gasoline being used, which varies from brand to brand, and even within the same brand, so we do make some recommendations about which brands of fuels to use. For example, Exxon which is a clean fuel but also reformulated year-round everywhere in America & "off-brands" have shown lower energy contents and lower mileage results compared to brands like Texaco, Amoco, and Citgo, more often than not, but this can vary depending on wher you are. For example while I don't care for Chevron gas here in the East, out in California a lot of people swear by that same brand. Shell has worked very well here in the East, but not out West, and so it goes. The single best informal indicator of energy content in the gasoline being burned we layman can use is to simply always calculate your gas mileage, and use the brands which deliver the highest mileage.
This didn't used to matter nearly so much a few years ago, but ever since the Federal air quality monitoring campaign got started in earnest a couple of years ago, we've been seeing wider swings in energy content as a result of the mandated used of reformulated fuels in areas of poor air quality, first only in winter, and then if the air quality hasn't improved enough, year-round. You see, the government will cut off Federal highway funds to an area if it's air quality is not improved, and so the easiest thing to do for those areas is to mandate the use of reformulated gasolines. Hopefully some day, they may discover that this is self-defeating, as you get less mileage as a result, and therefore have to burn even more fuel, so there can potentially be more pollutants. It's going to take awhile for all that data to come in and be acknowledged of course, so only time will tell.
Sorry, I didn't mean to get off on a tangent, just trying to give you a bit of perspective on all of that.

Hey 4 wheeler, I tried the Jet at first before I was aware of the website. I did not notice much gain at all so I sent it back and used the refund money for the Superchip which I got from Mike Troyer. It is so much better than the Jet and I know from trying them both on my current truck. It makes the truck so much more fun to drive because of the power gains throughout. I especially like the way it performs on the low end and while driving through town. You can feel the difference without a doubt. Good luck!!!!

Hi 4wheeler,
If you don't mind a reply from me, I can tell you that underdrive pulleys do work well. They don't give you a really noticeable seat of the pants difference like some mods do, but they do work, they reduce parasitic losses from driving the accessories and that does get more power to the rear wheels. A good 3-piece set is usually worth just under 12 hp at the rear wheels, and a 2-piece set a little bit less.
Just FYI.....

Thanks again Mike, for your help.
Im still thinking about the superchip, and if i buy one it will be from you, because it seems that the guys that bought from you have all good things to say about their chips. On the other hand there are some post on here saying that the super chips make no H.P. gains on the dyno, these guys did not get them from you ,so i dont really know what to think of that. Are they just bad chips or are the guys not putting them in right.Mike i am going to put a post on here asking the guys what they know and think of JACOBS INGNITIONS for the 150's I.E. h.p. and torqe ,throttle responce, gas mileage, anything that they could tell me. The door is wide open for you. Thanks Paul

4 Wheeler,
Mike hit it on the head with the pulleys. The difference you feel is slight, because it's more or less evenly spread across the RPM range. I have a three piece set, couldn't notice much difference except when towing the little extra HP was more obvious. At $100, that's less than $10 per HP, good bang for the buck!
Do a search on the Jacobs. I think there are several people on this site that have them. I have one on my '95 and love it. The 97 and up trucks have a much different ignition. Mine gave good low to mid range increases, and the truck can accelerate in OD from lower speeds much better. Saves me about $200 a year in gas.... pays for itself in two years!

Thanks Sign Master for the info, i want to find out as much as possible on these performance parts before i spend the money.
You see i had some performance stuff on my truck already and some of it, i think was loseing h.p. like the K&N Generation II air kit. All's it did was suck dirty Hot air from under the hood, the tube is a good design but the big filter hanging out in the open is a poor design, it needs to be in a sealed and enclosed kind of container that will suck cool clean air from the out side of the truck, not under hood air.
Thanks Paul

Hi Paul,
There is always controversy over who got what dyno results, and there are shades and grades of dynos and operator methods. I have had numerous vehicles of mine on the Superchips dyno, and can attest to, as that post you're talking about, the fact that the Mark 8, of which I have owned 3 personally, picks up the approximate power they claim, as it has on each of my 3 Mark 8's, a 1993 model as that other thread talks about specifically, and then a 94 and now a 95 model. The least amount of power I picked up in any of those 3 Mark 8's was 23 hp. at the flywheel, they're rated for maximum gains of up to 28 hp. We could go on all day about this, but having been at the facilities of every name-brand chipmaker in this country, nobody gets the kind of power gains on as many different types of vehicles as Superchips does, and that is why they tune every one of our vehicles, and why we represent them and nobody else.
As you read what the people who are using them here on these vehicles day in and day out have to say about them, take that into consideration before making your decision, that is the same thing most people do, take their time and read how others enjoy their Superchips. And by and large, with the occasional exception, you see people loving their Superchips, and knowing that they got more than any 5-6 or 8 horsepower, as it's very obvious in the seat of the pants.
One thing I wanted to mention to you is that we've had a chance to see what the K&N FIPK kit does on the dyno in these vehicles, and on the 1997 & up F-150 4.6, they add a solid 12 hp peak gain, and 14 hp peak gain on the 5.4 motor. There were some instrumented results posted awhile ago, where ambient air temperature was measured in the wheelwell area as compared to underhood temps in the area of the filter itself. And surprisingly enough, once the vehicle is moving, there wasn't more than a 20 degree difference between the 2.
It's the *reduction of restriction* in the air intake tract that provides the power gains from those airbox elimination kits, and the rather small difference in air temps does not negate the power gains. Interestingly, the power gains for either the Airaid brand or the K&N brand of FIPK kit are virtually identical in the 1997 & up F-150's. Now of course we don't even sell those types of parts, we just get a chance every once in ahwile to see what they do on the dyno, and we'll let people know when we can.
Best of luck whatever you decide to do,

The Diablo Chip is by far the best chip on the market. This chip takes advantage of full open throttle, you will notice quicker acceleration, firmer shift patterns. This chip can be programmed to take advantage of certain modifications you have made to the truck. Easy installation, plus a 30 day money back guarantee. Check out www.horsepower-plus.com

The site claims 25 HP and 40 lb-ft tq for a 5.4., that's pretty much what the superchip claims. You also claim it works at wide open throttle, so is that the only time it works? You also say firmer shifts but I did not see that claim anywhere on the site. The site also "highly recommends" the AFE Filter, if I don't buy it does that mean I don't get the full claimed benefits of the chip? The chip for Ford gas models is $269.00, with all the considerations listed how is this better than the superchip? Inquiring minds want to know
The Diablo chip sounds like a jet chip , why would we want a chip that is useing the old ways , we want power, off of idle. All this guy is a salesman telling us we should go buy this chip from his store, i did pop on his site and it did nothing for me.
