i have a 2001 supercrew 4x4 with 5.4 engine. i have replaced the air filter with a k&n unit and replaced the MAF with one from Granetelli. The truck runs great but once in a while the computer will throw a 0171 code (lean bank one). the dealer says it is because it is getting more air in than stock and there is nothing they can do about it. will the superchip help with this condition. it really doesn't bother me. every once in a while, i just clear the code. it only occures on freeway driving.

Hi ncoast,

That MAF is actually made by Pro-M, if memory serves (Pro-M does OEM deals with many vendors, as does C&L, etc.), and the reason you're getting that lean condition code is because of the MAF itself leaning out the A/F mixture incorrectly. They lean out the A/F mixture, which is why it will feel a little bit peppier when you install it, but you cannot continue to run it like that, as that can potentially cause engine damage long-term.

What you have is basically a lean cruise condition being reported, and that has to be corrected, which we can easily do for you. You are also too lean everywhere else, it's just not throwing codes. Those MAF's lean out the A/F ratio by as much as 2 full points; your stock cruise A/F is 14.7, as it should be, and then with the MAF, you're *way* too lean on cruise, and still too lean everywhere else too, so it all needs to be corrected if you're going to continue to use that part. Easily done.
