Question Hey Mike?

How many shift solienoids are there on a
4R70W trans? The dealer here in Ft. Lauderdale seems to think there is one.
Are they all together in one unit? Or is this guy an idiot? They quoted me a price
of $31 and change, and this seems reasonable enough. Just making sure I get the right parts before I drop the pan,,,98

p.s. Do I have a 4R70W? This is confusing to say the least

Cool

Thanks,Mike you are always looking out for us. Mine gave me a nice kick in the butt earlier today,it was the first time it did
it with my fiance in the truck. I was the proud owner of the Warner Bros. singing
frog for awhile there. She didn't believe me,LOL. We were sitting in traffic and as
I applied the gas,it started moving then went THUMP!. Scared her enough to agree to have the solienoids replaced,,,98

Hi Screamer,

There are 2 shift solenoids in the 4R70W's that I know of (mine has 2 in my Mark 8), and they are relatively inexpensive parts, they are attached to the valve body.

I don't know if it's still there, but there used to be an *excellent* article on the 4R70W tranny at this web site, run by a friend of mine: www.MN12performance.com

That is a web site devoted to performance issuesin the MN12 platform, which is all Lincoln Mark 8's and 1994 & newer Thunderbirds, and specifcally the Thunderbird Super Coupes, which all use the 4R70W automatic transmission too.

It goes into great detail about which parts have problems, how to fix them, what Sonex parts to use as replacements, etc. At the time that I did the upgrade that is described in that article, the shift solenoids were on their 7th revision, and they are up to either 8th or 9th revisions by now, easily. What I did was to use the valvebody, solenoids, and tranny pan (deeper) from a 1997 Thunderbird, which were the very latest available at that time, which was Summer of 1999.

It is nothing short of amazing how big an impact those cheap little shift solenoids have on the rest of the transmission. Problems with shift solenoids can destroy so many other parts, from sprags to drums to you name it.

Perhaps in your later 4R70W they are integrated into just one replaceable unit, I don't know, but that would make sense, as they are wear & tear parts, certainly.

Good luck!

HI Screamer,

If you woulnd't mind, please let us know if changing out the solenoids took care of that particular symptom you mentioned, that "thump" you got. They can indeed do that, and it sounds like it's coming up from the floorboard usually. In my case, they "thumped" when I would give it enough throttle opening to force a downshift, they would thump when they got the signal to fire from the ECU, then the transmission would go up into neutral and the motor would quickly rev up, then it would SLAM down into gear, good way to shatter the drum. That all happened very quickly, but once I knew it was doing that, I didn't let it downshift anymore, which was a bite until I got it fixed. Now of course, mine were very bad in that particular aspect, though I never got that "thump" just taking off easy in trafic like you did, but it (the "thump") can happen anytime.

Good luck & let us know,
