Hi Ben,
Actually, it has nothing to do with "backpressure" per se, that is a common myth. When you open up the exhaust flow too much (and/or do something really dumb like gut or remove the catalytic converters), you slow down the speed of the spent exhaust gases, thus drastically reducing the scavenging effect - *that* is what reduces the lower rpm torque, and kills performance. (On top of loosing heat in the exhaust if you remove the cats, which also reduces scavenging.)
Now I don't know exactly what you've done, where you started this "straight pipe," etc., so you'll need to give us a call for details.
Generally speaking, a chip is not going to fix a "bad" exhaust mod. Call us so we can go over with you exactly what you did, and some other things about the vehicle & we can then tell you what's happened & what you actually need to do to fix it.
Of course, having our custom tuning installed *will* be the single best bang-for-the-buck performance enhancement you can make, as nothing else for the same or less cost will improve performance as much - so a good tune is *always* worth doing, regardless of whatever other mods are on the vehicle - just FYI.
Best of luck,
