Question synthetic oil

I know this is not a chip question but I have seen where several of you use synthetic oil in your trucks, my question is how often do you change it. I saw on another sight where someone was using amsoil and was changing it every 25 thousand miles and replacing the filter twice during that. Is this true?

Hi K.,

I'd use Amsoil if I could get it at my auto parts store, it's an *excellent* synthetic, but that having been said, we use Mobil 1 in a weight of 10-30 in all our vehicles, and also use the Mobil 1 oil filters too.

We try to stay to a 3000 mile oil change interval, but sometimes that sneaks up to 4000 and even 5000 miles on rare occasion.

I'm not a believer in extending the oil change intervals just because synthetic oil is being used, so I would stick to a 3000 mile oil change interval.

There are of course situations where people & companies are using the Amsoil special oil filtration units and changing oil less frequently in some big commercial applications, and apparently getting good results. I just won't do that myself, and try to stick with 3000 mile intervals.

Good luck whatever you decide,

I've used 5w-30 since my truck was new as recommended by the owners manual. Can I switch to a synthetic oil of better grade and use the same weight. My truck has 19,000 miles?

I use Mobil 1 5W-30 and still change it at 3,000 miles. I live only 10 miles from work..and part of that is city driving (stop and go). I am not a fan of extended oil drains of 10, 20 or 25,000 miles.

mikey88...you will be just fine to switch to synthetic at 19,000 miles. The concern about switching to synthetic has been for vehicles with high mileage...that it *might* cause them to leak. Some have posted they have changed over at high mileage without a problem..others have said just the opposite.

I use Amsoil Series 2000 0W30 synthetic & SDF11 filter & change both every 10k miles. 103,000 miles on my 97 4.6 & it doesn't burn a drop...Nuff said.

Hi Mikey,

I agree with Dustoff, at 19K miles you can easily change over to a synthetic oil. Because of the molecules in synthetic oils being able to flow better and into tigher places, it's not a good idea to change over to synthetic at 100K miles, as that can contribute to increased leaks in older vehicles, but you'll be just fine. I've changed over as high as 50K miles and a bit more, with no problems.

HI K.,

Sure, you can change over at that number of miles.

As far as costs, I don't know what Amsoil costs, but if it was available off the shelf I'd pay whatever it cost, most likely, it's *excellent*.

The Mobil 1 we use usually runs anywhere from 3.75-3.99 a quart, buy it in the 6-pack small case and you usually get a better deal at any auto parts store, Walmart, etc.

Question

Mike, have you ever tried Royal Purple Oil?
I am trying it on this change and have not noticed any difference in performance or mpg.
Will probably go back to Mobil 1.

Amsoil 5w-30 is going for about 6.15 a quart now. Yes mobile one is cheaper but I feel Amsoils is a far superior oil which I have used in every vechicle I've owned and had no oil related failures at all. Also a friend of mine has used it in his f-250 with a 351 and he descided to change his cam to different one. When the cam was pulled out he mic'd it. He found no wear at all on it and he had at that time 68,000 miles on his truck. For those of you who want to use a synthetic oil, I wouldn't use it till about 10,000 miles or at least three petroleum based oil changes to ensure the rings are seated in.....

Cool

Become an Amsoil dealer and get your oil, filters, etc. at wholesale prices. You can make just a few small sales and make up the $50 a year dealer fee pretty easy. I made it up in the first month.

After that Amsoil is pretty comparibly priced to Mobil1 off the shelf. The only additional cost really is the shipping and handling fee you have to pay for the Amsoil to be delivered. That does kinda suck, but the vast additional protection that Amsoil products provides is well worth the additional cost and then some. I am 100% sold on it's benefits.

I buy at least 2 oil changes worth in advance so that I know I always have what I need on hand. Again, a little bit inconvenient, but well worth the inconvenience to me.

Just another thought if you would really like to use the Amsoil product and price is the only reason you don't.

Hi Red,

No I haven't, we've heard from some racers that they like it.

I personally feel that Amsoil probably makes the best synthetic out there for street engines, they were the first to have a fully-synthetic base stock, something Mobil 1 just went to about a year or so ago. Now that Mobil 1 has done that, I don't think that Amsoil is *far* superior to Mobil 1, though certainly somewhat better, whereas previously I would have felt that way, back before Mobil 1 went to a fully synthetic base stock.

Personally, for street use I think that any of these brands being discussed in this thread will be just fine, and provide superior protection. Due to convenience, we use Mobil 1, with excellent results.
